After a month on Naxos staying across a number of different properties, from a budget apartment in Agios Prokopios to the Naxian Collection's private pool villas, here's our honest guide to where to stay on the island, covering every area and every budget.

Choosing where to stay on Naxos is one of the more uncomplicated planning decisions you'll make, partly because the island has excellent accommodation across every budget, and partly because each area offers a completely different experience of the island.
We stayed in three distinct locations during our month on Naxos (and five different properties). First at Flisvos in Agios Georgios Beach, with windsurfing on the doorstep, Chora a short walk away, and the best sunsets on the western coast.
Then, along Plaka Beach, mornings meant empty sand and swimming with turtles before anyone else arrived. And finally, at the Naxian Collection, the most prestigious property on the island and one that more than justified the reputation.
Each stay taught us something different about where Naxos works best, depending on what kind of trip you're after.
It's worth knowing upfront that on Naxos, beauty and convenience don't always arrive together. The island is large - larger than most visitors expect, and the most beautiful, quietest beaches are often the furthest from town. Chora is the hub from which everything radiates, and the further south or east you go, the more a car becomes less of a luxury and more of a necessity.
The short version: Base yourself in Chora if it's your first visit and you want easy access to everything. Choose Agios Prokopios or Plaka if the beach is the priority.
And if budget allows, the Naxian Collection or a private villa is the kind of place that changes your perception of what a Greek island stay can be.

Choosing where to base yourself on Naxos is probably the most important decision you'll make before arriving. It shapes everything from your daily routine to how much you spend on transport, and on an island this size, that matters considerably more than on somewhere like Paros or Mykonos.
Here's our honest take on each area, after a month across the island staying in multiple properties.
NAXOS CHORA | OUR RECOMMENDATION FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS
Chora is where everything on Naxos starts and, for most first-time visitors, the obvious base.
The old town labyrinth, the Portara Gate at sunset, the best restaurants and bars on the island, the harbour, the bus station from which every beach and village is reachable — all of it is here. If you don't have a car and want maximum flexibility, Chora is the answer.
Accommodation ranges from budget studios tucked into the old town laneways to well-designed apartment hotels within walking distance of the waterfront. It's also the most affordable area on the island, which makes it particularly good for longer stays.

AGIOS GEORGIOS | FOR FAMILIES AND WATERSPORTS
Five minutes on foot from Chora's old town, Agios Georgios is the most accessible beach on the island and a genuinely good option for families, with calm, shallow water, a protected lagoon and Flisvos Sports Club right on the beach for windsurfing and paddleboarding.
We stayed at Flisvos during part of our month here. The vibe is active and social, the apartments are comfortable and practical, and the watersports access is unmatched anywhere else on Naxos.

The most popular beach area on the island and the most well-served.
Agios Prokopios has a good range of affordable apartments and studios - the kind with kitchenettes and pools that make a longer stay considerably more manageable on a budget. We stayed in a simple apartment here and found it worked perfectly as a base.
The beach is excellent, long, wide and turquoise, and the bus to Chora runs regularly enough that a car isn't strictly necessary, though it helps for the southern beaches.
Budget around €60-120 per night mid-range in shoulder season, climbing considerably in July and August. Accommodation books out fast in peak season, so plan ahead.

AGIA ANNA | THE AFFORDABLE MIDDLE GROUND
Sitting between Agios Prokopios and Plaka, Agia Anna is the most affordable beach area on the southwestern coast - a charming fishing village with a good range of budget and mid-range accommodation within walking distance of the water.
The northern beach strip has beach bars and tavernas. The southern cove is calmer, shallower and better for families with young children. The village behind has everything you need - tavernas, cafes, supermarkets and shops for essentials.

Our favourite area on Naxos, and the one we'd choose again without hesitation for a return visit.
Plaka has a quality that's increasingly hard to find in the Cyclades: genuine unhurriedness. Farmland still meets the beach at the southern end. Tortuga and the beach bars line the northern end. The mornings are quiet and the evenings are peaceful in a way the main beach strip never manages.
We stayed in a simple apartment here, with a kitchenette, pool, nothing flash, and loved every minute. The beach was extraordinary, and the whole area felt like a version of the Greek islands that's slowly disappearing elsewhere.
Budget around €80-150 per night mid-range in shoulder season. Luxury options on the beachfront push considerably higher.

FURTHER SOUTH AND THE INLAND VILLAGES | FOR THE ADVENTUROUS AND INDEPENDENT
The southeast coast, including Mikri Vigla, Glyfada, Pyrgaki, and the inland villages of Halki, Filoti and Apeiranthos are for those who want to get genuinely away from the tourist infrastructure.
Accommodation is sparse, featuring mostly self-catering villas and apartments, but the reward is complete seclusion and a version of Naxos that most visitors never see.

The highest-rated hotel on Naxos, and after reading through the reviews, it's not hard to understand why.
Perched on the hillside above Agios Prokopios, Virtu on the Hill is owner-operated by Konstantia, who, by all accounts, is the kind of host that makes guests want to come back specifically for her.
The reviews consistently mention staff going well beyond what you'd expect from a four-star hotel, which is the kind of hospitality that's increasingly rare and genuinely difficult to replicate at scale.
The property itself has a rooftop pool, sun terrace, lush garden, a modern restaurant serving Greek cuisine and a stylish bar. Rooms have balconies, Egyptian cotton sheets and sea views that guests describe as extraordinary.
The restaurant's breakfast - continental, American or full English, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options - gets consistent praise. There's also an indoor play area, beauty services and wellness packages, which makes it a surprisingly strong option for families as well as couples.
Agios Prokopios Beach is an 8-minute walk. Chora is around 6km away.

We stayed at the Naxian Collection during our month on the island, and it set a standard for what a Greek island stay can be.
A collection of private pool villas perched in the hills above the southwestern coast, with views sweeping across Plaka Beach and the Aegean beyond, and the gardens are manicured and beautiful, full of bougainvillea and citrus trees.
Each villa has its own private pool, terrace and panoramic views. The interiors are large and well-designed, Cycladic in character, contemporary in execution, with stone, whitewash and natural materials throughout.
The food is where it really earns its place. The in-house chef runs regular barbecue dinners featuring fresh Naxian produce, which were the highlight of our stay - shared plates and great company. The organic vegetable garden and wine cellar feed directly into the kitchen.
The final detail worth knowing: the Naxian Collection is run by the same family behind Naxian Experiences - the cooking class at the 16th-century farm that Anthony Bourdain once cancelled his afternoon plans to attend.
Day tours, cooking classes and island experiences can all be arranged in-house, which makes it exceptional as a base for exploring the island properly.
Best for families or groups wanting the villa experience with full resort amenities and genuine local connections on hand.

The design is boho-chic, with bamboo furniture, natural materials, private outdoor tubs on the balconies, and sea views from every room. Intimate, romantic and well-suited to couples who want the beach on their doorstep without sacrificing quality.
Same family operation means the same access to Naxian Experiences day tours, cooking classes and in-house island expertise. A lovely base for a Plaka stay.

Built into a rocky hillside 300 metres above Agios Prokopios, Naxian Utopia has one of the best vantage points on the island, and the pool and terrace look straight out over the Aegean. The views at sunset are lovely.
The property is a mix of suites and villas, built from locally quarried hand-cut stone with a design that takes the setting seriously rather than imposing something generic on top of it.
The spa runs Apivita treatments, there's a proper eco-friendly gym, jacuzzis on the terraces and an all-day bar that, by all accounts, earns its keep after dark.
Agios Prokopios Beach is a short walk down the hill. A strong option for those who want the elevated views and resort facilities of a hillside property without being too removed from the beach.

A well-designed beachfront hotel 90 metres from the sand on Plaka - close enough that the walk to the water barely warrants putting shoes on.

The amenity package is more comprehensive than you'd expect for a mid-range Plaka property: yoga sessions, outdoor sauna, outdoor gym, massage treatments, a kids cinema and playground and evening sunset walks along the beach.

One honest note: it's on a busy road. The noise of cars and people is fairly constant, so light sleepers may want to keep that in mind. The pool area and grounds are spacious enough that you won't feel crowded, which is not always the case in this price range on the island.

The homemade breakfast laid out each morning in the garden gazebo gets mentioned in almost every review. Cycladic minimalism throughout, private patios with jacuzzis, manicured gardens with a pond and a traditional wood oven for evenings outside.
A car is essential, though, and without one, getting to the beaches and Chora will add up quickly. With one, it's an excellent and genuinely characterful base.

Twenty-six independent villas set at the end of a private lane in the far south of the island, 100 metres from the sheltered golden sand beach at Pyrgaki.
Each villa runs across three levels, and is up to 110 to 220 square metres in size - huge in other words, and all feature panoramic Aegean views, private gardens, a pool and a BBQ. Beamed ceilings, fireplaces and Cycladic architecture throughout.
This is a genuinely remote location. The beach is on your doorstep, the cedar forest and Alyko are nearby, and Chora is a 35-minute drive.
For those who want to base themselves in the quiet south of the island with the right set-up for a group or family, it delivers completely. A car is not optional here; it's essential.

We stayed at Flisvos during part of our month on Naxos, and it's a distinctive base, unlike anywhere else on the island.
The apartments are comfortable and practical, with everything you need for a longer stay. But what makes Flisvos work is the setting and the vibe around it.
The complex sits right on Agios Georgios beach, with the shallow lagoon immediately in front - the same lagoon that makes this one of the best places in the world to learn to windsurf. The sports club runs lessons and equipment hire for all levels, from complete beginners to experienced riders wanting to push it.
It's an active, social atmosphere - guests tend to be there specifically for the water sports, which gives the place a particular energy. Families do particularly well here, with younger kids able to safely splash around in the shallow water while older ones or adults get on the boards.
Five minutes on foot from Chora's old town and restaurants, it’s one of the more honest value propositions on the island for what you get.

A few things that make a real difference: travel in May or September when your visit supports local businesses without adding to peak-season strain. Bring a reusable water bottle.
Eat at locally owned tavernas and buy from local producers. If you see rubbish on a beach, pick it up.
