Agios Prokopios Beach, Naxos: Everything Worth Knowing Before You Go

A guide to Agios Prokopios, Naxos

The complete guide to Agios Prokopios, the most popular beach on Naxos. Beach bars, diving, where to eat, where to stay and how to get there, updated 2026.

The hues of Agios Prokopios almost force even the most seasoned of travellers into travel cliches - all those overused shades of azure and turquoise, the endless golden sands and rows of vibrant sunbeds - but Naxos’ most popular beach genuinely earns each and every one.

Agios Prokopios is your quintessential Mediterranean summer holiday destination, a kind of beach, filled with beach clubs, sunbeds, and water sports.

The beach feels endless — a wide sweep of golden sand and some of the most gorgeous turquoise water on Naxos (there we go again!).

This is the kind of beach you’ll want to settle into — sprawled out on a sunbed with a book in hand and a cocktail nearby, breaking only for a dip every half hour.

Just beyond the sand, you’ll find a laid-back town with no-frills tavernas, affordable accommodation, and plenty of beachside activities for those who prefer a bit more action.

In this guide to Agios Prokopios beach, we share the best things to do, where to stay, where to eat, how to get there, and plenty more essential travel information.

Agios Prokopios is the most popular beach on Naxos, and it more than earns the reputation.

A wide sweep of golden sand, turquoise water that stops you, a string of beach bars along the southern end and a quieter, undeveloped stretch to the north-west for those who'd rather lay down a towel and be left alone.

We stayed in Agios Prokopios during part of our month on the island - a number of budget apartments with a kitchenette and pool that kept costs manageable and put us within easy reach of both the beach and the bus to Chora.

It's that kind of place: unpretentious, well-serviced and considerably more affordable than the equivalent on Mykonos or Santorini.

The beach itself divides naturally into two experiences. The southern end has five or more beach bars with sunbeds, food and cocktails… a more European-style beach experience.

The north-western end is mostly public, quieter and better suited to families or those who want the sand without the scene. Both are worth knowing about depending on what kind of day you're after.

This guide covers everything worth doing at Agios Prokopios: the best beach bars, where to eat, where to stay and how to get there.

PLAN YOUR TRIP TO AGIOS PROKOPIOS BEACH

WHERE IS AGIOS PROKOPIOS?

Agios Prokopios sits on the southwestern coast of Naxos Island, around 10-15 minutes south of Chora and a few minutes north of Agia Anna.

It's one of the longest beaches on the island's southwestern coast and sits within easy reach of both the capital and the quieter beaches further south.

WHEN TO VISIT

May and September are the best time to visit, when the temperature is warm enough for a full beach day, it’s considerably quieter than peak season and noticeably cheaper across accommodation, sunbeds and food.

July and August are when Agios Prokopios is at its busiest and most expensive. The meltemi winds can make the northern end of the beach uncomfortable in peak season, with blowing sand and choppy water the main issues. The western public stretch is more sheltered and worth knowing about on bad wind days.

Due to its size, the beach handles peak season better than most on the island, but go in with realistic expectations about crowds and parking in summer, especially on the busier southern end.

HOW TO GET TO AGIOS PROKOPIOS

BY BUS | KTEL Line 1 from Chora runs regularly to Agios Prokopios, costs €2.10 and takes around 15 minutes. The bus stop is close to the beach - no long walk required. Check current timetables at naxosbuses.com before travelling

BY CAR | 15 minutes from Chora, 5 minutes from Plaka. Parking is available at the large open area near the salt flats between the beach and the road. It fills fast in peak season, so arrive early or park at the quieter western end of the beach. Book car rental in advance via Discover Cars

ON FOOT | Agios Prokopios is connected to Agia Anna and Plaka by a coastal path, which is a pleasant 20-30 minute walk south along the beach if you're staying nearby

BEACH FACILITIES

There are no public toilets or showers on the beach itself, so you'll need to use facilities at a beach bar or head back to your accommodation.

Several small supermarkets sit just off the beach for snacks, drinks and beach gear. The Spar on the road toward Chora is useful for stocking up if you're in a self-catering apartment.

WHERE TO STAY IN AGIOS PROKOPIOS | QUICK PICKS

After a month on Naxos staying across multiple properties, here are the hotels we'd book near Agios Prokopios.

BEST LUXURY | Virtu on the Hill: the highest-rated hotel on Naxos, perched on the hillside above Agios Prokopios with two pools, spectacular views and owner-operated hospitality that guests consistently single out. Five minutes to the beach by car.

BEST BOUTIQUE | Naxian Utopia: hilltop hotel with sweeping Aegean views, private plunge pools and a spa. A strong alternative to Virtu for those wanting design-led luxury.

WHERE WE STAYED | Naxian Collection: private pool villas in the hills above the southwestern coast. Exceptional for families. One of the finest properties in the Cyclades.

BEST MID-RANGE | 18 Grapes Hotel: well-designed boutique hotel steps from the beach with two pools, a spa and babysitting services. Punches above its price point.

BEST VALUE | Hotel Francesca: pool, comfortable rooms, short walk to the beach. Great value for the location.

BEST BUDGET | Hotel Proteas: self-contained studios with kitchenette and pool. Our pick for longer budget stays.

THINGS TO DO AT AGIOS PROKOPIOS BEACH

LAZE AT THE BEACH BARS, OR ON THE BEACH

Although Naxos’ best beach clubs are found on nearby Plaka Beach, Agios Prokopios still holds its own: the long, white-sand stretch is dotted with relaxed, boho-chic bars and restaurants, many offering sunbeds and cabanas right at the water’s edge. For now, at least, Mykonos pricing hasn’t quite made its way here — so a comfortable beach day is still (comparatively) affordable.

Our favourite was Kahlua, which features boho-Mediterranean design, chilled music, a menu of burgers, salads, burritos and smoothies and staff who are friendly rather than performatively so.

Sunbed prices vary by row and season, with front row runs around €30 per set, dropping toward the back and at the quieter western end of the strip.

The sunbeds and beach area are well maintained, and the staff are some of the friendliest around. Hire a set of beach beds (2 beds and 1 Umbrella - prices vary depending on which row and season) and enjoy the vibes.

Other beach bars worth knowing about:

DEL MAR | Italian-leaning menu with pizza, pasta and tiramisu, just off the beach. Casual, affordable and good for a lazy lunch

MACAO BEACH NAXOS | South American-influenced beach bar with cocktails and a more lively atmosphere than the others on the strip

SENSU | The newest and most polished addition to the Agios Prokopios strip. Beachfront setting, handcrafted cocktails, fresh locally sourced seafood and an upmarket feel. The pick for those wanting something more considered than the standard beach club offering

If beach bars aren’t your thing, and you’d prefer to enjoy a stretch of sand without others around, the undeveloped western part of the beach is perfect for a flop-drop-float kind of day.

The calm shallow waters also make this area perfect for families with small kids too

GO DIVING OFF AGIOS PROKOPIOS

Right on the beach at Agios Prokopios, Blue Fin Divers is a PADI 5-Star Resort that has been running diving experiences off Naxos since 2006.

The waters between Naxos and Paros are worth exploring, with over 10 dive sites including colourful reefs, a cargo ship wreck from 1982, the remains of a WWI Arado seaplane and the Lost Beaufighter, a British WWII aircraft still largely intact on the seabed and now a thriving artificial reef. The dive team is consistently well-reviewed, particularly for patience with beginners.

For non-divers, guided snorkelling sessions explore the bay's marine life from the surface.

GO SWIMMING IN THE BLUEST WATERS

The waters off Agios Prokopios are likely to be some of the bluest blues you’ve ever seen in your life - so strikingly vivid you’ll want to drop everything and dive right in.

The beach stretches long with shallow waters, making it perfect for hours of floating, wading and swimming. We spent many mornings here and can confidently say it’s one of the best swimming spots on the island.

While it lacks the rocky reeks of nearby Plaka beach, you can still snorkel from the shore here and spot some aquatic life. Grab some snorkelling gear from any mini market in town.

One caveat: the Meltemi winds can make Agios Prokopios quite windy and sometimes uncomfortable, especially in late July and August. Check the forecast or ask a local before heading out.

WATCH A MOVIE AT THE OUTDOOR CINEMA

One of the more unexpected and enjoyable things about Agios Prokopios is the Art Cafe Arts Festival, a summer programme of live music, art installations and an outdoor cinema running through July and August.

For €10 you get a drink, a snack and a seat under the stars watching a Hollywood film with the summer breeze coming in off the sea. Ridiculous value and one of those experiences that earns its place on any Naxos itinerary.

Beyond the cinema there are jazz and Greek music performances and rotating art installations throughout the season.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK AT AGIOS PROKOPIOS

Agios Prokopios is home to a large number of restaurants, with a range of really good traditional options, and some varied international fare including Italian.

Although Naxos is a foodie paradise, we found the food options here fell short of our expectations - far better options exist at close by Plaka beach. But for ease, affordable prices, and ambience, Prokopios is a good option for those staying in town.

Here are a few of our favourite options:

LEFTO’S SOUVLAKI & KEBAB HOUSE

Lefto’s was suggested to us by a friend and boy it did not disappoint. Lefto’s serves perhaps our favourite gyros in all of the Cyclades, with the ingredients super fresh, the halloumi moist, and the flavours exceptional. So much so, that we came here almost every day.

On top of that, it’s super affordable, and the staff are so friendly, making a real effort to smile and say hello each day.

GIANNOULIS TAVERNA

Another recommendation from our local friends, family-run Giannoulis is definitely the best taverna in Prokopios, and the lines out the front each night attest to that. Serving a range of traditional Naxian and Greek cuisine, the food here is tasty, although we did find better elsewhere on the island.

We suggest the Dakos salad, the mussel risotto, and a range of small bites including the fava spread, and zucchini balls. The complimentary ouzo and yoghurt & honey to finish our meal was a wonderful touch too (Greek hospitality is something we’ll never get over!).

DEL MAR

For a laid-back meal just steps from the sand, Del Mar is a solid choice. Located just off Agios Prokopios beach, it’s a summer favourite for no-frills Italian-Greek fare at reasonable prices.

If you go, we recommend sticking with the pasta, which is the star of the show here anyway. We had the spaghetti agio e olio and it was flavoursome and delicious. The pizza, on the other hand, didn’t quite hit the mark.

That said, the service is warm and welcoming, and the setting is relaxed, making it a lovely spot for a casual evening after the beach.

SENSU BEACH BAR

A newcomer to the Agios Prokopios dining scene (it opened in 2025), upmarket beachfront restaurant and bar Sensu celebrates Naxian ingredients and Cycladic flavours in laid-back luxury.

Enjoy a handcrafted cocktail and classic beach bites under their signature umbrellas, or head to the restaurant for fresh, locally sourced seafood and a crisp glass of wine - all served with a side of Naxian sunset and warm hospitality.
