The 15 Best Beaches on Hvar Island That Will Blow Your Mind

Best beaches of Hvar - Ivan Dolac

After six weeks on Hvar, working our way around the coastline, we can say with confidence that the island's beaches are world-class, despite having almost no sand. Here's every beach worth visiting, how to get there and what to expect.

UPDATED MAY 2026

After eight months of living through the coldest, dreariest winter of our lives in London, all we could dream of was feeling the sun on our skin.

So we did what any sensible person would do - we packed up our London life and headed to Hvar Island. An island we'd heard was drenched in 7.7 hours of summer sun per day and surrounded by the clearest turquoise water in the Adriatic.

The perfect antidote for two vitamin D-deprived Australians with absolutely nothing keeping them in England.

It turned out to be one of the better decisions we've ever made.

For six weeks we lived by the ocean, spending every spare day exploring the coastline in search of the best beaches on Hvar, from the popular coves where all the tourists come to play to the hidden bays we somehow stumbled upon and never wanted to leave. We called it research. It was just a very good excuse to be living our best life.

As Australians, we set an unfairly high bar for beaches. Hvar cleared it without breaking a sweat.

One thing worth knowing before you dive in: Hvar's beaches are almost entirely pebble, rock and limestone - there's very little sand to speak of. If that sounds like a dealbreaker, trust us, it isn't.

The clarity and colour of the water more than compensates, and there's something genuinely preferable about diving straight off a limestone slab into crystal-clear Adriatic water without sand in everything you own.

With expectations now set, here are the fifteen best beaches on Hvar, based on six weeks of very thorough research.

WHICH HVAR ISLAND BEACH IS BEST FOR YOU?

Short on time? Below are our recommended Hvar beaches

BEST BEACH OVERALL | Malo Zaraće: our personal favourite, worth the drive

BEST NEAR HVAR TOWN | Pokonji Dol: 25 minutes on foot, excellent water, two konobas

BEST BEACH CLUB | Carpe Diem Beach, if the budget allows

BEST FOR FAMILIES | Mina Beach, Jelsa: sandy, shallow and calm

BEST FOR SECLUSION | Malo Zaraće or Mekićevica: both require effort, both reward it

BEST FOR SNORKELLING | Maslinica or Mekićevica: exceptional water clarity

BEST NUDIST BEACH | Jerolim Island: pine forest, clear water, restaurant and bar on site. Clothing optional

BEST SOUTH COAST BEACH | Ivan Dolac or Jagodna: remote, stunning, car essential

MOST UNIQUE | Malo Zaraće: east-facing cliff amphitheatre unlike anywhere else on the island

Our advice? Don't try to tick off every beach on the island.

Choose based on the kind of day you want: Pokonji Dol or Bonj for an easy swim near town, Dubovica for a beautiful bay with a konoba, Malo Zaraće if you want somewhere genuinely quiet, and the Pakleni Islands if you want to get on the water entirely.

The Maestral wind builds from the northwest most afternoons in summer, typically from around midday. East-facing and deeply sheltered coves handle it best. Check conditions before committing to an exposed stretch of coastline.

15 STUNNING BEACHES ON HVAR ISLAND | NEAR HVAR TOWN

POKONJI DOL BEACH

The best beach within walking distance of Hvar Town, and one that somehow never felt overcrowded in our experience, despite being so close to the action.

A 25-minute walk from St Stephen's Square along the coastal path, Pokonji Dol has that particular shade of Adriatic turquoise that stops you mid-stride and makes the decision to jump in immediately.

The pebble beach is more comfortable than most on the island, the two konobas flanking it serve the day's catch alongside cold beers that taste better than they have any right to in that heat, and the whole place has a relaxed, unhurried vibe that belies how close it is to town.

For a first swim on Hvar, or a lazy afternoon with nowhere to be, this is our pick.

THE DETAILS

Where |Pokonji Dol, Hvar

Type | Pebble beach, calm turquoise water, sheltered cove

Getting There | 25-minute walk from St Stephen's Square along the coastal path

Facilities | Two konoba restaurants, sunbed hire available

Best For | First-timers, those without a car, easy half-day beach breaks, sundowners

Tip | The walk back uphill in peak summer heat is tougher than the walk down - go early or late and bring water

the famous beach of Pokonji Dol, Hvar

MEKICEVICA BEACH

A 20-minute walk through pine forest from Pokonji Dol brings you to one of the most secluded coves near Hvar Town, and one that most visitors never find.

Mekićevica is a sheltered pebble cove fringed by pine trees with natural shade, clear water and, on most visits, very few people.

It has a relaxed clothing-optional atmosphere, not an organised nudist beach like Jerolim Island, but a quiet cove where people tend to do as they please without anyone paying much attention. Come for the seclusion rather than the facilities.

A short walk further through the forest brings you to Robinson's, a secluded restaurant serving fresh, homemade food in a lovely setting. A hidden gem on the island, we suggest spending lunch here, and enjoying a few summer beers.

THE DETAILS

Where | Mekićevica Beach

Type | Secluded pebble cove, sheltered, natural shade from pine trees, calm water

Getting There | 20-minute walk through pine forest from Pokonji Dol, no car needed, wear comfortable shoes

Facilities | None at the beach itself. Robinson's restaurant a short walk further through the forest - bring cash

Best For | Seclusion seekers, those wanting a quiet alternative to the busier coves near town, clothing-optional bathing

Tip | Bring everything you need for the day. Robinson's is the only food option and it's a further walk from the beach, pack a lunch as backup

Mekićevica beach is one of the best beaches on Hvar Island

BONJ BEACH, HVAR TOWN

Our favourite beach within easy reach of Hvar Town — and one with a distinctly split personality.

Ten minutes west of the main square, near Hotel Amfora, Bonj Beach is home to the exclusive Bonj Les Bains beach club - private pontoons, four-poster sunbeds and the kind of crowd that arrives by superyacht.

Our budget didn't stretch that far. The public pebble beach alongside it is free, the water is just as turquoise and nobody asks any questions.

It's a perfect option for those who want to stay close to Hvar Town's restaurants and bars, or who don't fancy the walk to Pokonji Dol. Several good food and drink options surround the beach on both sides.

THE DETAILS

Where | Bonj beach, Hvar

Type | Pebble beach, calm water, beach club and public section side by side

Getting There | 10-minute walk west of St Stephen's Square — no car needed

Facilities | Bonj Les Bains beach club with private pontoons and sunbeds; public pebble beach alongside; restaurants and bars nearby

Best For | Those who want to stay close to town, a splurge beach club day, easy access to Hvar Town nightlife

Tip | The public section of the beach is perfectly good — same water, same view, no cost. Arrive early in peak season to claim a spot before the crowds build

DUBOVICA BEACH | HVAR’S BEST BEACHES

One of the most beautiful bays on Hvar, and one of the most visited, which tells you everything you need to know.

About 8km east of Hvar Town, Dubovica sits in a magical sheltered bay surrounded by pine trees and olive groves. The water shimmers in that particular shade of Adriatic blue that makes the decision to swim immediately feel completely inevitable. We obliged. It was perfect.

The pine trees provide genuine shade, which is a useful feature in peak Croatian summer, and a konoba at the back of the beach serves fresh seafood worth stopping for. Dubovica Beach Bar handles cold drinks efficiently on a hot afternoon.

The trade-off is popularity. Peak season brings crowds that fill the pebbles by mid-morning. Get there early, or accept that you'll be sharing one of the more beautiful spots on the island with a significant number of other people who had the same idea.

THE DETAILS

Where |Dubovica beach, Hvar

Type | Large pebble beach, sheltered bay, calm water, natural pine shade

Getting There | Car or scooter - about 15 minutes east of Hvar Town. Limited parking, fills quickly in peak season

Facilities | Konoba restaurant, Dubovica Beach Bar, natural shade under pine trees

Best For | Couples, swimmers, those who want a beautiful bay with food and drinks on hand

Tip | Arrive before 10am in July and August to secure a good spot. The konoba is worth staying for lunch - fresh seafood, reasonable prices, lovely setting

Dubovica beach from the air, Hvar - Best beaches on Hvar Island

MILNA BEACH | HVAR’S BEST BEACHES

A sleepy, pine-fringed cove just outside Hvar Town with a pace of life that feels a world away from the Riva, even though it's only a short drive.

The small village of Milna has a retro-Mediterranean charm that's increasingly hard to find close to Hvar Town.

The water is clear rather than dramatically turquoise, but excellent for snorkelling, and the protected cove makes for a calm, comfortable swim. Sunbeds are worth hiring given the pebble base.

The village has a small market, a handful of restaurants serving fresh seafood and a little bakery for a cheaper, quicker bite. It's not the most spectacular beach on the island but as an easy, relaxed half-day option close to town it's pleasant.

THE DETAILS

Where |Milna beach, Hvar

Type | Protected pebble cove, clear water, calm and sheltered

Getting There | Short drive or scooter ride from Hvar Town - also reachable on foot for the energetic

Facilities | Sunbed hire, restaurants, small market, bakery in the village

Best For | A relaxed half-day close to town, snorkellers, those who want a quieter alternative to Pokonji Dol

Tip | The bakery in the village is a good cheaper option if the restaurants feel too much - grab something and eat it on the beach

Best beaches on Hvar - Milna beach

BEST BEACHES NEAR STARI GRAD, JELSA AND VRBOSKA

OSLIC BEACH IN STARI GRAD

Not the most spectacular beach on Hvar, but if you're based in Stari Grad and want a quick swim without getting in a car, it does the job perfectly well.

Just outside town, Oslic is a typical Dalmatian town beach, a small stretch of sand, concrete and rock that's more functional than beautiful. The water is clear and swimmable, the setting is pleasant enough, and the proximity to Stari Grad makes it an easy morning or evening dip.

A couple of practical notes: it gets busy in the early afternoon, and the sea breeze picks up later in the day, making it slightly choppy by mid-afternoon.

Arrive earlier rather than later. There are no shops or restaurants beyond the town itself, so pack your own food, drinks and water before you head out.

THE DETAILS

Where | Oslic beach, Stari Grad

Type | Mixed sand, concrete and rock, calm in the morning, choppier in the afternoon

Getting There | Walking distance from Stari Grad town centre

Facilities | None at the beach, stock up in town before you go

Best For | A quick swim close to Stari Grad, early morning dips, those without a car

Tip | Go in the morning before the afternoon sea breeze picks up and the crowds arrive. Pack everything you need from town as there's nothing beyond the beach itself

MASLINICA BEACH

A beautifully secluded cove just north of Vrboska, and one of the clearest stretches of water we found on the island.

The beach itself is flat natural limestone slabs rather than pebble or sand - actually more comfortable than it sounds, and perfect for laying a towel and spending a few hours in the sun.

The water clarity makes it an excellent snorkelling spot, and walking paths connect it to the surrounding coves if you want to explore further.

There's nothing in the way of facilities at the beach itself. Head to Vrboska for lunch and drinks, then return for the afternoon. The combination of the two makes for a genuinely lovely day.

THE DETAILS

Where | Maslinica Beach, north of Vrboska

Facilities | None - head to Vrboska for food and drinks

Best For | Snorkellers, those wanting seclusion near Vrboska, swimmers

Pack | Towel, sunscreen, water, snorkelling gear, packed lunch

Read more | Vrboska Guide

MINA BEACH, JELSA

A short walk outside Jelsa, Mina is the best family beach on Hvar. It’s sandy, shallow and calm in a way that most of the island's beaches simply aren't.

The sandy, sheltered cove makes it easy and safe for young children to swim, while the rocky terrace alongside is ideal for sunbathing.

The Mina restaurant nearby serves solid Dalmatian cuisine with views over the bay, worth stopping at for lunch.

If you're not staying in Jelsa, it probably doesn't warrant a special trip from Hvar Town or Stari Grad. But if you're based there, it's a good beach on your doorstep.

THE DETAILS

Where | Mina Beach, Jelsa

Facilities | Mina restaurant nearby, natural shade available

Best For | Families with young children, those staying in Jelsa

Tip | Arrive before 10 am or after 4 pm in peak season to find a comfortable spot

BEST SECLUDED BEACHES ON HVAR ISLAND

MALO ZARACE BEACH

We'll be honest, we debated including this one. Malo Zaraće was our favourite beach on Hvar, and there's a part of us that would rather keep it that way.

A secluded east-facing bay about 30 minutes drive from Hvar Town, cradled by high limestone cliffs that turn pink at sunset and sheltered from the afternoon Maestral wind that makes other beaches uncomfortable.

The day we visited, we had it almost entirely to ourselves. We spent hours in the outrageously clear water and didn't want to leave.

To get there, take the turnoff from the main Hvar to Stari Grad road and follow the steep road down, park up and walk down the stairs to the beach. If you've hired a boat, follow the coast east past Pokonji Dol and Milna - the approach from the water is extraordinary.

No shops, no restaurants, no facilities. Pack everything you need and settle in for the most perfect day on the island.

THE DETAILS

Where | Zaraće beach, Hvar

Getting There | Car - 30 minutes from Hvar Town off the Stari Grad road. Also accessible by boat

Facilities | None - bring everything you need for the day

Best For | Seclusion, swimming, those willing to make the drive, sunset watching

Tip | The cliffs turn pink at sunset, and the whole bay becomes an amphitheatre of colour. Time your visit to stay for it

JAGODNA BEACH, SVETA NEDALJA

We'd read about Jagodna before visiting and made a point of seeking it out.

A tiny, secluded cove tucked between Sveta Nedjelja and Ivan Dolac on Hvar's dramatic south coast, set at the foot of bright orange cliffs and forested slopes with bright blue water glistening below.

It's one of the most visually striking beaches on the island.

The real selling point for two Australians who'd spent weeks navigating Hvar's pebble beaches: sand. Actual sand. Jagodna has a mostly sandy beach, and the feeling underfoot after weeks of limestone slabs is, frankly, joyous.

Getting there requires effort - the south coast road is winding and the final approach is steep. Go before mid-afternoon, as the sun drops behind the surrounding cliffs earlier than you'd expect and the beach loses its light.

It’s worth noting that Jagodna has a relaxed clothing-optional atmosphere, and the beach around the corner is a designated FKK nudist beach if that's your preference.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jagodna Beach, Hvar

Getting There | Car only, winding south coast road, steep final approach. Allow extra time

Facilities | None, bring everything you need for the day

Best For | Those craving sand, dramatic cliff scenery, and south coast explorers

Tip | Arrive before midday, the cliffs cast shadows over the beach in the afternoon, and the best light is gone by mid-afternoon.

IVAN DOLAC BEACH

An hour's drive from Hvar Town on the dramatic south coast, Ivan Dolac is the kind of beach that rewards the effort of getting there with something genuinely special.

The small village sits surrounded by steep slopes of pine trees and vineyards.

Some of the finest Plavac Mali grapes on the island grow on these hillsides, and the beach below is small, quiet, and almost entirely free of tourists.

The pebbles are fine enough to be comfortable, the water is clear and calm, and on the day we visited, the only other people present were some locals who clearly had no intention of sharing their discovery with anyone else.

THE DETAILS

Where | Ivan Dolac Beach, Hvar

Getting There | Car only - approximately one hour from Hvar Town on the south coast road

Facilities | Very limited - pack everything you need for the day

Best For | Those who want genuine seclusion, wine lovers (the surrounding vineyards produce exceptional Plavac Mali), and a full day away from the tourist trail

Tip | Combine with a visit to Jagodna Beach on the same day - they're close to each other on the south coast and together make for a perfect remote beach day

LUĆIŠIĆA BEACH, NEAR SVETA NEDALJA

Consider this an insider tip passed on in good faith, because we never actually made it there ourselves.

Our hosts on Hvar raved about Lučišća, and everything we heard suggested it's one of the most beautiful and least-visited stretches of water on the island.

The catch: the road in from Hvar Town to Sveta Nedjelja is unpaved, and our car hire company wouldn't allow it. We considered pushing our luck.

If you've managed to hire a 4WD, or are willing to walk in from Dubovica or Sveta Nedjelja, you'll apparently be rewarded with turquoise water and almost nobody else around. We'll take our hosts' word for it.

THE DETAILS

Where | Lučišća Beach, Hvar

Getting There | 4WD recommended, unpaved road from Hvar Town to Sveta Nedjelja. Alternatively, walk in from Dubovica or Sveta Nedjelja

Facilities | Unknown - pack everything you need to be safe

Best For | Adventure seekers, 4WD drivers, those willing to walk for serious seclusion

Tip | Check current road conditions before attempting the drive - and confirm your car hire company allows unpaved roads before you commit

BEST BEACHES AND BAYS ON THE PAKLENI ISLANDS

Just off Hvar lies the Pakleni Islands, an archipelago made up of 16 pine-covered islands and turquoise coves.

We visited during our favourite days out on Hvar, where we hired a small speedboat and ventured around the beautiful bays and beaches of the islands.

Here are our favourite beaches and bays on the islands (or read our Pakleni Islands guide)

PALMIZANA BEACH, PALKENI ISLAND

The most popular beach in the Pakleni archipelago and the easiest to reach, which means it's also the busiest.

Palmižana is small, beautiful and flanked by good konobas and bars that make it a pleasant place to spend a full day.

Sunbeds are available for hire and fill up fast in peak season. Arrive early or accept that you'll be sharing a small stretch of pebble with a lot of other people who had the same idea.

Either way, the water is exceptional, and the surrounding area rewards a little exploration on foot.

THE DETAILS

Where | Palmižana Beach, Pakleni Islands

Getting There | Water taxi from Hvar Town harbour, or self-drive boat hire

Facilities | Sunbeds for hire (from around €10-15 per day), konobas and bars

Best For | An easy full beach day on the Pakleni Islands, those who want facilities and food on hand

Tip | Arrive early - the best sunbed spots and konoba tables go fast in peak season. Bring cash

MLINI BEACH

Possibly the brightest blue water we saw on the entire island. We swam for an hour and could have stayed twice as long. It was hot, the water was perfect, and there was nowhere better to be.

If you've hired a boat for the day, time your arrival at Mlini for around lunch. The small restaurants serving fresh seafood BBQ on the waterfront are exactly what you want after a morning on the water.

Park yourself on a sunbed for the afternoon, swim when the heat gets too much, repeat.

THE DETAILS

Where | Mlini Beach, Pakleni Islands

Getting There | Boat only - self-drive hire from Hvar Town or guided sailing tour

Facilities | Sunbed hire (per day or per hour), small restaurants serving fresh seafood BBQ

Best For | A long lunch stop on a boat day, swimmers, those wanting facilities without the crowds of Palmižana

Tip | Arrive around midday for lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants - the fresh seafood BBQ is worth timing your day around

Pack | Towel, sunscreen, water, cash for sunbeds and lunch

JEROLIM ISLAND, THE WORLD’S #1 NUDIST BEACH

A short water taxi ride from Hvar Town, Jerolim Island is home to one of the most famous naturist beaches in the world — and one of the most beautiful small islands in the Pakleni archipelago regardless of what you choose to wear.

The island is covered in low-lying pine forest with sheltered bays and coves perfect for swimming. A small restaurant and bar welcomes all visitors, naturist or otherwise — clothing is optional rather than mandatory, and the atmosphere is relaxed and entirely unpretentious. Around 70% of visitors go full naturist, the rest do as they please, and nobody pays much attention either way.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jerolim Island, Pakleni Islands

Getting There | Water taxi from the Arsenal building in Hvar Town - departs every 30 minutes, around 10 minutes crossing, €10 return

Facilities | Small restaurant and bar, sunbeds available from around €10, outdoor facilities on site - bring cash

Best For | Naturist bathing, a quieter alternative to Palmižana, those who want a full island experience away from the crowds

Tip | Clothing is optional, not mandatory - go at your own comfort level, and nobody will bat an eyelid either way. Bring water shoes for the rocky beach and cash for the bar

TOP PAKLENI ISLANDS BAYS

Beyond the named beaches, the Pakleni Islands are dotted with unnamed coves and hidden bays that are best discovered by boat - drop anchor wherever looks good, jump in and see what you find.

A few of our favourites from our own days out on the water:

The two large bays on Sveti Klement after Vinogradisce Bay - no name, no facilities, no crowds. Just clear water and pine-covered cliffs. These were among the best spots we found on the entire island.

Zdrilca Beach on Marinkovac Island - sheltered, clear and consistently one of the quieter spots in the archipelago even in peak season.

If you have snorkelling gear, bring it. The water clarity throughout the Pakleni Islands makes underwater exploration genuinely worthwhile.

HOW TO VISIT HVAR’S BEST BEACHES & FAQ

WHERE TO FIND THE BEST BEACHES ON HVAR

The beauty of Hvar is that there really is a beach for every travel style. The challenge isn't finding a good one; it's knowing which is right for you.

A quick cheat sheet before we dive in:

  • Want a full beach club day? Bonj Les Bains or Palmižana on the Pakleni Islands

  • After seclusion? Malo Zaraće or Ivan Dolac on the south coast

  • Something completely different? Jerolim Island for a naturist experience, or Jagodna's sandy cove

  • Close to town and easy? Pokonji Dol, 25 minutes on foot from Hvar Town

NEAR HVAR TOWN | The easiest beaches to reach, with no car required. Pokonji Dol, Bonj and Mekićevica are all accessible on foot and cover every style from beach club to secluded cove.

THE SOUTH COAST | The most dramatic and rewarding beaches on the island. Malo Zaraće, Dubovica, Ivan Dolac and Jagodna all require a car but deliver genuine seclusion, clear water and scenery that most visitors never see. Best in the morning before the sun drops behind the cliffs.

STARI GRAD, VRBOSKA AND JELSA | Quieter coves overlooking the mountains of Brač, better suited to families and those wanting a more relaxed, local atmosphere. Maslinica and Mina Beach are the picks in this area.

THE PAKLENI ISLANDS | The best swimming and snorkelling in the area, only accessible by boat. Palmižana, Mlini and Zdrilca are the standout beaches, but the unnamed bays between islands are often the best of all.

WHEN TO GO

May and September are the sweet spots - think warm sea, manageable crowds and beaches that don't fill up by 10 am.

In peak season, the beaches closest to Hvar Town fill up with day-trippers by midday. Go early or go late. The south coast beaches are best in the morning before the sun drops behind the cliffs, particularly Malo Zaraće, Dubovica and Ivan Dolac.

For the vivid blues of the Adriatic, visit in the early afternoon when the light is at its most intense.

Remember that the Maestral wind builds from the northwest most afternoons in summer, typically from around midday. East-facing and deeply sheltered coves handle it best - Malo Zaraće is the standout pick on a windy afternoon, sheltered by high cliffs on both sides.

Check conditions before committing to an exposed stretch of coastline.
