Enclosed by a crescent-shaped beach cradled by lush greenery, and home to some of the best waves in the country, sleepy Hiri has gone from hidden backwater to backpacker paradise in recent years.
Now, design-forward hotels and boutique hostels are popping up alongside world-class bars and bohemian eateries, shaping as an ideal spot for backpackers, digital nomads and families looking for somewhere to enjoy the unhurried pace of life.
Across our many visits to Hiriketiya, we’ve found accommodation in the area can be a bit hit-and-miss, but with new openings post-Covid catering to all budgets, accommodation options are plentiful. To help you choose the right place for you, we’ve curated the very best places to stay in Hiriketiya.

WHERE TO STAY IN HIRIKETIYA | THE AREAS EXPLAINED
Hiriketiya is small enough that you might assume that it doesn’t matter where you book, as you’ll be nearby to just about everything. And while in years past that might’ve rung true, Hiri is a different beast these days.
For a start, the rate of development is fast, so the once sleepy horseshoe bay with only small family homestays and surf schools is no longer. It’s now busy, brash and overflowing with options.
Development has spread west to Dickwella, and east to Nilwella, with quieter spots located between each. We’ve stayed in most corners of the bay across our five visits, so are well versed on where to book.
Here are the areas we recommend.
HIRIKETIYA BAY
The Bay itself, and all the roads that wind down to meet it, is the epicentre of Hiriketiya - the best surf break on the south coast, the beach clubs, restaurants and brunch spots, bars, boutiques and concept stores, all of them basically a two-minute walk away.
If your idea of a holiday is to surf at dawn, relax with a long brunch, yoga in the afternoon, and watch the sunset from a cocktail bar, then maybe have a boogie into the night, this is where you’ll want to stay.
But, and it’s a big but… the noise here is pretty overbearing once it gets dark. Whether it be tuk-tuks roaring through the night, or the deep hum of bass from a bar open till late, it gets a bit frustrating after a while.
Sometimes, being right in the thick of the action has a trade-off, and the noise is one…

THE RIDGE | BETWEEN HIRIKETIYA AND DICKWELLA
This is our favourite spot, and where we’d suggest our readers stay, especially the families.
The ridge that runs between the two bays (Hiri and Pehembiya Beach) is flanked by thick jungle (that is unfortunately, slowly disappearing), and is a short walk to either beach or town centres, but is quiet, breezy, and calm, while the sea views here, especially on the southern side, are excellent.
It’s home to a growing cluster of exceptional villas that look out over the water - most with their own pool, gardens, and space for kids to let loose. It’s also home to MOND, our favourite stay in the bay.

PEHEMBIYA BEACH/DICKWELLA
Dickwella sits west of Hiriketiya, but the villages have basically merged over the last few years - for instance, Smoke & Bitters, the best bar in Sri Lanka, sits on this side, as does the quiet beach of Pehembiya, which is perfect for those looking to escape the busy waves of the Bay, and families.
There are a range of villas and affordable hotels, although we tend to think the better stays in Hiriketiya sit on the ridge or the bay itself.

WORTH KNOWING | Sunset happens on this side, but not much surfing.
NORTH OF THE BEACH
The roads and lanes that lead up to the southern highway are where a number of the smaller, more affordable homestays and properties are located.
In addition, it’s where most of the affordable cafes and local rice & curry huts are, so we believe it suits the more budget-conscious travellers.
The biggest benefit, though, is the location - it’s still only a five-minute walk into town, and all that it offers.

MAWELLA, TALALLA & TANGALLE
The area between Hiriketiya and Tangalle is home to some of the most incredible resorts and hotels on the Island, so we thought it was prudent to include them.
Sure, you’ll be between 15 - 45 mins away from the action, but for these resorts, we think it’s worth it. In addition, some of the beaches on this stretch of coastline are relatively untouched and stunning.
Think barefoot luxury personified, and you can still enjoy the vibe and surfing of Hiriketiya as a day trip or two.

MOND HIRIKETIYA
MOND had been on our Hiriketiya wish list for years before we finally stayed, and thankfully it lived up to the hype.
There are just four rooms, all facing the Indian Ocean, with raw concrete, teak, huge sliding screens and the kind of tropical modernist design that still feels properly original.
It’s simple, quiet and incredibly well considered, with Hiriketiya Beach a couple of minutes down the hill and some of the best coffee and breakfast in the bay waiting upstairs.
There’s no pool, no air-conditioning and no resort-style extras, which is exactly why we like it. MOND is for people who care more about architecture, food, breeze and atmosphere than a long amenities list, and for us, it remains one of Hiriketiya’s most special stays.

BELDON BOUTIQUE
A newcomer, and one of the most exciting openings in Hiri for a while.
Beldon is tiny by design: two bungalows and one suite, tucked into a quiet pocket a few minutes' walk from both the bay and Smoke & Bitters. The owners cite Geoffrey Bawa as a reference, and in many ways it feels like staying in a Galle Fort bungalow - soft whites, exposed wood, and high ceilings.
Olu Bungalow is the brightest, with large open living, a private plunge pool and an outdoor lounge. Lily Bungalow is set further back with its own plunge pool and garden corner, and is the calmer of the two. Sera Suite has a balcony over the greenery and an ensuite bathtub, and is large enough for families.
If you’re a large group, you can also book all three as a full villa, which sleeps up to ten across three bedrooms and two plunge pools.
Cots are free, breakfast is included and comes off the restaurant menu, and there's a bar on site.
One caveat from recent guests: the reception area hasn't caught up with the rooms yet, and reads as a slightly different property. The rooms themselves are exactly as photographed.

BELIKA BEACH CLUB
Painted pastel pink, Belika Beach Club could well be Barbie’s very own Sri Lankan hideaway, and while the Tulum-vibes might look a little out of place in Sri Lanka, Belika is offering something not previously seen in these parts - brash, colourful accommodation with an emphasis on fun.
Each room has its own colourful aesthetic, blending Greek, Mexican and Sri Lankan architecture to brighten up your life. The balcony is where the party’s at, though, with endless views overlooking the Indian Ocean
The pool and bar area are wonderfully inviting, featuring sunbeds, cabanas and an all-day bar/restaurant serving up French cuisine.
This hotel, we think, is for Instagrammers or lovers of colour, and while it might not be our vibe, it 100% is on trend and super cool, making it a brilliant hotel in Hiriketiya.

LA PLAYA HIRIKETIYA
La Playa Hiriketiya sits right on Hiriketiya Beach, which is still its biggest selling point - you can go from bed to the water in a couple of minutes, then head back to the pool when the bay gets busy.
The rooms are bright and simple, with cane furniture, natural textures and a few thoughtful touches rather than anything overly polished. Some have views across the bay, and the whole place leans into that easy, barefoot kind of stay Hiri does so well.
Outside, there’s a beachfront bar and restaurant, plenty of loungers, and one of the better pools in the bay.
It’s also one of the easier places to stay if you’re travelling with kids, purely because you’ve got the beach, pool and food all in one place without having to organise much.
While not luxury per-se, the location, and vibes mean this is one of the more in-demand stays in the book - we advise booking early.

SEA VIEW CLAY HOUSE
Newly renovated Sea View Clay House sits on the ridge between Hiriketiya and Dickwella, with some pretty epic views out across the Indian Ocean.
It first opened in 2018 with traditional mud-clay walls and thatched roofs, and thankfully, that part hasn’t changed.
Inside, though, things have had a properly updated. The rooms now are tropical-modern in style, while the original clay-and-thatch exteriors remain. It shouldn’t necessarily work, but it does, and it gives the place a little more character than many of the newer stays around the bay.
There are now seven clay rooms, plus a hostel. The Deluxe Double Sea View is our pick, with a king bed, private bathroom, bathtub and a terrace overlooking the ocean. There’s also a new Family Room Sea View with air-conditioning and flexible bedding, making Sea View Clay House an option that works well for just about everyone.
Downstairs, Betaz is the big new addition, an in-house bar and restaurant that runs from breakfast and coffee through to cocktails, music and late nights, and has quickly become somewhere you’d visit even if you weren’t staying here. We suggest a visit here at sunset, even if you aren’t staying.
Breakfast is included, and surf lessons, scooter hire, whale watching and taxis can be arranged on site.

MIMOSA HILL | THE BEST VILLA IN HIRIKETIYA
If we had a group, a healthy budget and wanted to stay right in the heart of Hiri, this is where we’d book.
Mimosa Hill sits in a huge garden above the coast, with palms, lawns and enough space around the house that it feels removed from everything happening down in the bay. A private gate at the bottom of the property leads down towards Hiri’s best breaks, while Hiriketiya itself is only a short walk away.
The villa is split across two buildings, with four ensuite bedrooms, long verandas, open living and dining spaces and a pool set lower down the garden looking through the palms towards the sea. it’s absolutely gorgeous.
It works especially well for two families travelling together because everyone gets a little separation.
There’s a full kitchen, washing machine and staff on hand, with a chef available if you’d rather enjoy incredible rice & curry by the poolside.

THE SAFFRON HOUSE | THE OTHER CONTENDER
Saffron House is different. Less about being right in Hiri, more about having an absurd amount of space with epic views across the Indian Ocean.
It sits on almost three acres of tropical gardens on the headland between Hiriketiya and Dickwella, around 30 metres above the sea, with lawns running down towards a long stretch of rocky coastline and an infinity pool looking straight through the palms. It’s this view alone that’s the selling point.
Inside though, it gets even better. There are four big ensuite bedrooms with polished concrete floors, huge mosquito-draped beds and furniture made locally from teak and mango. The house is wrapped around a courtyard and verandah, which is where most of the eating, reading and doing-not-much happens.
And then there’s the wildlife. Peacocks in the trees, sea eagles overhead, quirrels in the garden and, occasionally, blue whales passing offshore.
Usually you book the whole house, although individual rooms are sometimes released closer to the date if the villa is still free.

GINGER PALM VILLA | BEST FOR FAMILIES
Ginger Palm is the perfect option for families, because it was designed with that intention in mind.
There are four ensuite bedrooms, including a proper kids’ room with bunk beds, alongside a super-king room with a bathtub, another king and a triple. In other words, it’s huge.
There’s plenty of living spaces, including an open-air lounge, TV room, rooftop terrace and a huge saltwater pool, so you’re not all piled into the same room once the kids are asleep.
They’ve thought about the less glamorous stuff as well: travel cots, high chairs, stair gates and a pool fence can all be arranged.
The villa is fully staffed, with butler service and a kitchen team, and the food seems to be half the reason people rave about staying here. Sri Lankan breakfasts, hoppers and curries without having to get everyone dressed and out the door? Sold.

SAM & LOLA'S | BEST FOR COUPLES
Sam & Lola’s is much smaller: two one-bedroom villas sitting side by side between Hiriketiya and Pehembiya.
Each has its own plunge pool and deck, king bed, outdoor shower, little kitchenette and enough privacy that you don’t really feel like you’re sharing the property with anyone. The interiors are simple but nicely done, with furniture made by local carpenters and plenty of greenery around the villas.
There are thoughtful details too, including UV-filtered drinking water, which is very welcome when you’re trying not to burn through plastic bottles every day, and both beaches are only three to five minutes away on foot. MOND is nearby for breakfast, and Smoke & Bitters for cocktails and dinner.
Monkeys also regularly pass through, so don’t leave the doors open unless you fancy sharing breakfast.

WETAKEIYA HOUSE | BEST FOR A LONG STAY
Wetakeiya feels more like somewhere you could actually live for a few weeks. Or forever, for that matter.
It’s an elevated three-bedroom house looking towards the Indian Ocean (close to MOND, Sam & Lola’s, & Saffron House above), with the master opening onto a covered verandah and big daybed, and the other bedrooms facing the garden and pond.
There’s a proper lounge, dining room, pool and plenty of space to unpack, which can be a godsend after a few weeks on the road.
At the front of the garden is an ambalama, the traditional open-sided pavilion, and it’s probably where you’ll end up spending most evenings - yoga in the morning, a book when it rains, and a sundowner while the peacocks move around the rocks at sunset.
A local couple look after the house, and longer stays of up to a month can be arranged at a special rate.

THE BEST HOTELS IN HIRIKETIYA | MID-RANGE
CASA VANA
Casa Vana is a five-room guesthouse tucked into jungle a minute or two from the beach. Owned by a Danish-Canadian couple, it has a warm, personal feel that’s increasingly hard to find around Hiriketiya.
The rooms are all a little different, but the laid-back, jungle-hideaway feel is one of its appeals. There’s a wooden bungalow with its own kitchen and large verandah, an upstairs room looking into the treetops, and a spacious ground-floor room with a private verandah and daybed.
There’s also a two-bedroom family room with a kitchen, making Casa Vana a surprisingly good option for longer stays with kids. Most rooms have open-air bathrooms, which is a lovely little touch.
A couple of things to know before booking. There are no cots or extra beds, so it’s maybe not the best option if you’re travelling with a baby or young child. Weekend noise can also drift across from the bay, and the access road passes a rubbish dumping area - more a Hiriketiya issue than a Casa Vana one, but still worth knowing about.

THE YARD HIRIKETIYA
The Yard might be the answer to a problem Hiriketiya has and doesn’t much like admitting: it’s now loud.
A six-room house around 200m back from the beach but still close enough that the beach, cafés and restaurants are all a few minutes away on foot. The Yard is hidden behind a small wooden door that opens into a leafy courtyard you’d barely know was there. And it’s quiet, which is a massive win.
There are six ensuite rooms, all air-conditioned, with several opening onto semi-outdoor bathrooms. The top-floor penthouse is our recommendation for a longer stay, with its own kitchen, lounge and a little more space to spread out.
The other rooms share a kitchen, two living areas and the courtyard, so the whole place feels more like a well-run home than a hotel, which we love.
There’s no pool and no restaurant, though - but the beach is close, and so are the cafés.

THE SALTY YOGA & SURF RETREAT
Formerly The Salty Pelican, The Salty has had a rebrand and a refresh, but its reason for existing hasn’t really changed. If we were travelling Hiriketiya solo, this is probably where we’d stay.
There are private rooms and premium shared rooms, which are tropical-minimal in vibe and well-appointed.
But the real appeal is everything happening outside them, with the communal spaces and a weekly calendar of events that makes The Salty one of Sri Lanka’s better ‘hostels’.
Monday is hoppers night, Wednesday brings a fire-grilled BBQ, Friday is curry and rice, and Sunday is seafood BBQ night. There are also cinema nights in the open-air shala and the weekly Salty Circle over coffee and cake. Yoga runs up to three times a day, every day except Monday. Breakfast is included and its delicious, while El Grotto, the poolside restaurant, mixes Sri Lankan flavours with Mexican-inspired and international dishes.
Basically, you can arrive alone and have made life-long friends by that evening.
You can book a room as normal or go for one of the three - or seven-night packages, which bundle accommodation with breakfast, yoga, surfboard hire and wellness treatments; the surf packages also include lessons.

JASPER HOUSE
On a quiet hill at one end of Hiriketiya Beach and surrounded by coconut palms, Jasper House was for a long time the best boutique hotel in the bay, and it’s still a solid choice, though Hiri has moved fast around it, and newer openings like Beldon have raised the bar on design.
Many of its 12 locally furnished rooms are open-air, so the sound of the ocean, the breeze and, occasionally, the wildlife all drift straight in.
There’s also a large yoga shala, a private lap pool, and surfboards and bikes for hire, making it an easy place to settle into for a few days.
Mornings are probably when Jasper House feels most like itself: palms moving in the breeze, monkeys in the trees, and the beach only a couple of minutes away on foot.

LE CABANON
Three apartments a few steps from Hiriketiya Beach, Le Cabanon is our pick for anyone planning to stay a little longer rather than just pass through.
Hosts Romain and Cassandra have kept things simple and considered, with plenty of natural materials, open-air bathrooms that bring the jungle in, and small kitchen setups in each apartment.
There’s a fridge and the basics for making breakfast or something easy yourself, which can come in handy a few weeks into a trip, when the thought of another café breakfast starts to lose its charm. If you’d rather not cook, you can also order a home-cooked breakfast in.
While you’re here, stop by Cassandra’s concept store, L’Atelier, in town, as it’s one of the better places around Hiri for clothes, homewares and beautifully made bits and pieces.

HIRIKETIYA BEACH RESORT
Where a lot of Hiri is small villas, design-led guesthouses and four-room stays, Hiriketiya Beach Resort is much more of a traditional hotel due to its size and set-up, which helps because you know exactly what you’re getting.
There’s a proper pool and pool bar, a restaurant, spa treatments, free parking and a broad mix of rooms. If you’ve been bouncing around Sri Lanka every couple of nights and just want somewhere easy - good AC, a decent-sized room and breakfast sorted - it does that job well.
Rooms range from doubles with garden or pool views through to superior kings, triples and family rooms with balconies. Some of the larger rooms sleep three or four, which also makes this one of the easier/affordable options for families who don’t want to book an entire villa.
But we suspect most of our readers would lean more to the design hotels throughout the bay, and that’s okay (that’s us, too).
It’s a short walk to Hiriketiya Beach and the town’s main hub, which is helpful.

SALT HOUSE HIRIKETIYA
Salt House has been around since 2017, which by Hiriketiya standards makes it something of an old hand, and it’s one of the first places we photographed on our visit to the Bay in 2018. Back then it was flanked by thick jungle, dirt roads, and nothing much else. Now, it’s right in the heart of the action, which definitely has its pros and cons.
There’s a four-bed female dorm, several doubles overlooking the palms and gardens, and a much larger rooftop apartment that sleeps four.
Most rooms are fairly simple, but they’re comfortable, air-conditioned and suit the kind of stay Hiri does best: mornings in the surf, long breakfasts, yoga, then back to the beach.
Daily yoga sessions are included, as is surfboard use, which is useful if you’re planning to surf most days. They also run longer yoga and surf retreats through the season if you want something a little more structured.
The restaurant is another reason people end up here - the brunch is excellent and runs from early morning into the afternoon.
The one thing we’d flag is the karaoke bar next door. It doesn’t run every night, and it’s obviously not Salt’s fault (see above; Salt used to be surrounded by nothing but jungle), but it comes up often enough in recent reviews to be worth knowing about. Light sleeper? Bring earplugs, or look elsewhere.

DOTS BAY HOUSE | OUR BUDGET PICK
Our number one pick for budget travellers, Dots Bay House is a Hiriketiya institution - part hostel, part hotel, part bar, and for years one of the main meeting points for surfers and backpackers passing through the bay.
The rooms are simple and modern, there’s a pool for the hours you’re not at the beach, and yoga, massages and plenty of good food on site. It’s the kind of place where you can quite easily spend most of the day without going very far.
By evening, Dots really comes into its own. The bar fills up, travellers drift in from around the bay, and it remains one of the easiest places in Hiri to meet people over a drink. Happy hour runs from 6–7:30pm on cocktails, and the gin basil smash has long been a favourite of ours, but we digress.
Dots has also put a lot of thought into sustainability and supporting the local community, which gives it another point of difference in a bay that has changed enormously over the past few years.

VILLA HIRIKETIYA
We stayed at Villa Hiriketiya for two nights on our most recent trip to the bay, and it’s still one of the better-value places to stay this close to the beach.
It’s a small, family-run guesthouse with large, simple rooms, queen beds and ensuite bathrooms, plus a pool tucked into the garden out back.
Nothing is especially flashy, but the place is warm, relaxed and very easy to settle into.
The real win is the location. Hiriketiya Beach is about a minute away on foot, and some of our favourite places to eat are just around the corner.
Bring earplugs though; it gets loud at night.

BAY HIRIKETIYA
Bay Hiriketiya is about as close to the beach as you can get without sleeping on it, which is exactly why you'd book.
The rooms are simple, spacious and modern, with private balconies and also a small garden with sun loungers.
Location does most of the heavy lifting here, with Hiriketiya Beach just outside, and some of the bay’s best cafés, restaurants and bars are all within a few minutes’ walk, so you can pretty much forget about transport once you arrive.
It’s not the most design-led stay in Hiri, but if you want space, affordability, convenience and the beach almost on the doorstep, Bay Hiriketiya is an easy choice.

SINGHE HOUSE
Singhe House is closer to Dickwella, but it’s right above Smoke & Bitters, which is a selling point in itself (IYKYK).
The rooms are simple, clean and comfortable, with private bathrooms and enough space for a short stay. Nothing particularly fancy, but that’s not really the point here - it’s affordable, well located, and gives you most of what you need within walking distance.
Hiriketiya Beach is an easy stroll away, while Pehembiya Beach is even closer, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants and bars nearby.
If you’re travelling on a tighter budget but still want to stay close to the action, Singhe House makes a lot of sense.

BEYOND HIRIKETIYA | THE BEST LUXURY STAYS IN SRI LANKA
If you’d prefer proper luxury - 5* resorts with all the trimmings, there is a range of incredible properties located close to Hiriketiya on the southern coast.
We’ve selected our favourite resorts below, which are still a stone’s throw from Hiri and its perfect waves & vibes.
ANANTARA PEACE HAVEN TANGALLE RESORT
If you want the full five-star resort experience, this is it. Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle sprawls across a coconut-fringed headland outside Tangalle, with a huge pool overlooking the ocean, an excellent Ayurvedic spa, kids’ club, restaurants and enough space that you could quite happily disappear here for a few days.
The rooms are huge by Sri Lankan hotel standards, with balconies or terraces, big bathrooms with separate tubs and rain showers, and either garden, beach or ocean views.
If you’re going all-in, the pool villas are the real draw, with its own plunge pool, with options facing the gardens, ocean or beach.
Families can go even bigger with the two-bedroom pool villa, which has separate living and dining spaces and sleeps up to four adults and two children.
It’s a completely different proposition to staying in Hiri - it’s polished, resort-like and luxurious, but actually good for families.

HALCYON MAWELLA
Halcyon sits on Mawella Beach, about ten minutes from Hiriketiya, and feels a world away from the noise of the bay.
There are just ten rooms, all under traditional iluk-grass roofs and set among palms, with big beds, handmade furniture, patterned tiles and private terraces.
Nothing feels overly styled or fussy, which is just the way we like it.
The days here personify slow, barefoot luxury - swim, read, wander down to the beach, take a kayak out, then come back for a drink before dinner. There’s also a three-bedroom villa if you’re travelling with friends or family.
If Hiriketiya feels a little too full-on, but you still want to be close enough to dip in and out, Halcyon is a very good compromise.

THE TEAK HOUSE VILLA
The Teak House sits high above a gorgeous beach on a former coconut and cashew plantation, and has the vibe of an old-school Sri Lankan beach house than a sprawling resort. And that’s what makes it so appealing.
There are just two huge bedrooms, with teak floors and walls, tall ceilings, four-poster king beds wrapped in mosquito nets, daybeds at the foot, and big wooden shutters opening towards the gardens and sea. Simple, yet stylish.
The rest of the house is almost entirely open-plan, with wicker furniture, timber everywhere and large openings that let the breeze move straight through.
There’s also a 12-metre pool tucked into the garden, plus plenty of places to read, sleep, or do absolutely nothing for a few hours.
Food is a big part of the stay too, with Sri Lankan curries and fresh seafood coming out of the kitchen most days.

Where is the best area to stay in Hiriketiya?
Hiriketiya Bay itself if you want to walk everywhere and be in the surf at dawn; Dodampahala or Temple Road if you want to be five minutes from the sand but sleep properly; the ridge between the bays for views and breeze; and Dikwella for lower prices, sunsets and a more local feel.
Anything advertised as Hiriketiya but located in Mawella, Talalla or Tangalle is a 15–40 minute drive away.
How much does it cost to stay in Hiriketiya?
Budget guesthouses start from around US$30–50 a night, mid-range hotels with a pool run roughly US$90–170, boutique and design properties sit above that, and private villas run from around US$450 + a night for the whole house.
Prices climb sharply from December to March.
Is Hiriketiya good for families with young children?
Yes, with the right property. The bay is protected and shallow at the shoreline, and villas like Ginger Palm Villa have bunk rooms, play equipment, baby gates and a chef.
Avoid the hillside properties with steps and open edges - MOND says so themselves - and note that Casa Vana has no cots, 50* Stay is adults-only, and Halcyon Mawella doesn't take under-6s.
Do you need to book Hiriketiya accommodation in advance?
For December to March, yes, and well in advance. Several of the best properties have fewer than six rooms - MOND has four, Beldon has three— so they fill months out. May to October is far more relaxed and considerably cheaper.
Which Hiriketiya hotels have pools?
La Playa, Jasper House, Salt House, Dots Bay House, Belika Beach Club, Hiriketiya Beach Resort, Sudu Villa, Ginger Palm Villa and Mimosa Hill all have pools. The Atrium has the bay's only rooftop pool.
MOND, The Yard, Casa Vana and Le Cabanon don't, as do various homestays and budget options.
Is Hiriketiya or Dickwella better to stay in?
Hiriketiya for surf, walkability and the social scene; Dickwella for value, sunsets, longer stays and a town that isn't built entirely around visitors. They're about ten minutes apart, so you can easily do both.
Are there hostels in Hiriketiya?
Yes. Dots Bay House is the best option, with dorms alongside private rooms and the best evening scene in the bay. Salt House and Hiriketiya Beach Resort also run dorm beds.
How far is Hiriketiya from Colombo airport?
Around 2.5 to 3 hours by private transfer via the Southern Expressway. By train, take the coastal line and get off at Wewrukannala or Matara, then take a tuk-tuk for the last stretch.
