Discover the best villas in Canggu, Bali. From upscale Balinese villas to sprawling bohemian compounds, this blog post covers them all. Find your dream villa and have an incredible stay in the vibrant and bustling district of Canggu.

There is something sublime about Canggu.

The turquoise ocean, curling with waves and dotted with surfers, washes into the charcoal-black sand beach. Along the coastline, music dances over from the beach clubs and nightly spotlights glide across the starry sky. The town itself is energised with the buzz of rapid development– new restaurants, cafes, shops, and villas are constantly springing up to seize whatever space has suddenly become available.

It’s a whirlwind of tourism, commerce, and surfing against a backdrop of Balinese culture. Rice farms, wedged between warungs and homestays, sway in the wind spurred by a hundred motorbikes. On ceremony days, chiming songs escape the many Hindu temples and flood the streets with their mystical tunes. If the day is especially clear, the shape of a distant volcano hovers above the horizon.

Canggu is quickly becoming the centre of Bali’s tourism industry (read our guide to Canggu here). And it’s easy to see why.

Here, you will find no shortage of incredible restaurants, highly aesthetic cafes, vibey beach clubs, and jaw-droppingly beautiful accommodations.

Where you decide to stay is one of the most important decisions of any trip. After all, your temporary home-away-from-home can set the tone for the rest of your holiday. Choose wisely and you’re in for a treat.

Fortunately, Canggu has an abundance of exquisite villas for you to choose from. We’ve covered our top picks in this blog post. From upscale Balinese villas to bohemian apartments to sustainable resorts, this post covers them all. No matter your style, you can find your dream villa in Canggu.

THE BEST AREA TO STAY IN CANGGU

PERERENAN

Pererenan used to be a quiet village just outside of Canggu… but those days are over. The Canggu boom is engulfing Pererenan and bringing with it cafes, restaurants, shops, and beach clubs. We have no doubt that much of Canggu’s frenetic development will focus on Pererenan in the coming years.

Unsurprisingly, Pererenan includes Pererenan Beach and the main street of Jl. Panti Pererenan. Pererenan Beach is where locals launch their (sometimes giant) kites, which wave and twinkle over Canggu.

As far as where to eat and drink, Red Gunpowder, Woods, Born Bright, and Honey are popular spots.

BATU BOLONG & ECHO BEACH

Batu Bolong is Canggu’s beachiest district. It includes the famous Echo Beach and Old Man’s Beach, as well as Nelayan Beach, Batu Bolong, and Canggu Beach. If you’re looking to surf some waves, Batu Bolong is probably where you’ll do it.

Jl. Munduk Catu, Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, Jl. Padang Linjong, and Jl. Nelayan is Batu Bolong’s main streets – and they are filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants. In 2023, it’s a flurry of construction with new establishments opening every week.

The best beach clubs in Batu Bolong (and Canggu too, we’d argue) are The Lawn and La Brisa.

Our favourite restaurants in the district are Crate Cafe, I Am Vegan Babe, Warung Sika, and Moana. There are plenty of outstanding coffee shops too. Make sure you check out Blacklist Coffee Roasters, BGS, Revolver, and the new kid on the block, Dawn Patrol.

BERAWA

Berawa is the vibrant, bustling district that encompasses the lower half of Canggu, closest to the border with Seminyak. It’s jam-packed with incredible restaurants, stores, beach clubs, and traffic. Jl. Pantai Berawa and Jl. Raya Semat is the main streets that you will have to navigate. A river divides Berawa and its northwestern neighbour, Batu Bolong.

Finns Beach Club and Atlas Beach Club set the tone for Berawa’s beaches (lights, music, and sometimes fire).

For brunch in Berawa, we recommend Cinta Cafe, duatiga, Nude, and Baked. Our top restaurant picks are Pels Supershop, Shofuku Ramen Bar, and Lena’s Kitchen. For coffee, stop by the award-winning Hungry Bird Coffee Roaster or grab a latte + donut combo at Dough Darlings.

CANGGU VILLAS | WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

DAILY CLEANING

Most villas in Canggu provide daily cleaning. After all, who wants to clean while on vacation?! While you’re out enjoying brunch at one of Canggu’s amazing cafes or seeing the best things to do in Bali, your home-away-from-away is being thoroughly freshened up and tidied. It’s a perfect system.

FILTERED WATER

Hopefully, you already know that you should NEVER drink tap water in Southeast Asia. Do not drink the tap water, do not wash your vegetables with the tap water unless you’re boiling or cooking them after, and do not open your mouth in the shower. We don’t even wash our toothbrushes with tap water, although some brave travellers do.

Some villas in Canggu do have filtered water flowing from their taps. But this is something that you should always, always double-check. Do not assume that the water is safe. Otherwise, you could be in for a bad case of Bali Belly.

Villas that do not have filtered water running throughout, however, should still provide drinking water in a water dispenser/cooler. You can use it to refill your water bottles and wash your vegetables if you plan on cooking.

Nonetheless, we still highly recommend that you pick up a Grayl water filter for your travels in Bali. It’s a water purification + filtration system which allows you to use water from just about anywhere. We have the GeoPress and the Ultralight.

KITCHEN

A kitchen can be a massive blessing while you’re travelling, especially with kids! As incredible as the food scene is in Canggu (and as much as we all love nasi goreng), being able to prepare your own meals can be a breath of fresh air. This is particularly true for long-term travellers.

Even if you have absolutely zero intention of cooking on your holiday, a kitchen can still be handy for refrigerating leftovers and making coffee.

Most of the villas included in this post have kitchens… but there is a considerable range of amenities - some have a fridge and kettle, others may have a microwave, and some villas have a full kitchen including everything from a toaster to an oven.

That being said, many villas and homestays in Canggu do not have kitchens. If you don’t need one, this won’t be a problem.

PRIVATE POOL

Okay, so maybe you don’t need to have a private pool… but don’t you want one? The Balinese sun is hot and you are on vacation. We know Canggu has those legendary beaches… but let’s be real, they’re pretty crowded and often dirty. Plus, those highly surfable waves are less than ideal for a peaceful soak.

With your own private pool, there is zero competition. It’s just you, your cold Bintang, and those crispy clean waters. Having your own private pool is the best way to take your relaxation to the next level.

SECURITY

Canggu (and Bali in general) is an extremely safe destination. Although pickpocketing does exist on busy streets, violent crime is practically nonexistent. Nonetheless, it’s nice to have security at your villa and most offer this as a service. This extra peace of mind is always worth it.

AIR CONDITIONING

Bali is hot! And as much as we love the high temperatures and sunshine, you do need a respite from it. Consequently, air conditioning is an absolute must-have at your villa in Canggu.

The good news is that all villas listed above come with air conditioning either in the bedrooms or throughout the entire building.

Winning.

SUSTAINABILITY

If you’re new here, we really care about responsible travel and sustainability. We firmly believe that you can see the world without destroying it– and this belief has fundamentally changed the way that we live and travel.

Bali is at the heart of over-tourism in Indonesia and Southeast Asia as a whole. A lot of people come here… and for good reason. It’s an incredible place, an actual tropical paradise with some of the most kind-hearted locals that you will ever meet.

But the world’s fascination with and love for Bali has consequences. The infrastructure cannot keep up with the influx of tourists and the rapid development is pushing out locals and their businesses. Plastic pollution is another massive problem.

During your trip to Bali, we encourage (and beg) you to travel as responsibly as possible. Take a look at eco villas, hotels, and resorts in Canggu. Places that exist sustainably, were built with the environment in mind, and value the local community.

Here are a few of our tops sustainable travel tips:

TRAVEL DURING SHOULDER SEASON | Shoulder season is the time before and after the peak season when things are quieter, cheaper, and more enjoyable. Travel then to reduce over-tourism, and extend the season for local operators

DON’T BUY BOTTLED DRINKS | Please, for the love of the ocean: DO NOT BUY SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BOTTLES! You'll understand why when you see a bunch of plastic bottles bob past you in the open sea. Buy one of these fantastic bottles instead

USE LESS WATER | To help reduce the pressure on water supplies, keep your water usage to a minimum. We know that’s hard to do on holidays, but quick showers, and turning the tap off when brushing your teeth, cleaning etc. really help

DO YOUR OWN CLEANUPS | See rubbish on the beach, forest or town? Pick it up, and dispose of it properly. If every traveller helped out during their holiday, the beaches, oceans and forests would be a much happier place for it

DON’T USE PLASTIC BAGS | Pack a reusable tote and use these to carry your snacks, drinks, or new souvenirs instead

LEAVE NO TRACE | Limit your consumption of plastic, and opt for sustainable / zero-waste alternatives instead. Pack a reusable water bottle, bring your reusable coffee cup, and if you can’t sip your cocktails without a straw, bring a metal or bamboo one along instead. And never leave a trace...

BE ANIMAL-FRIENDLY | Don’t participate in any form of animal tourism/abuse, and observe animals from a distance

SUPPORT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY | Visit a locally owned restaurant for a meal, which means both supporting the local economy and community and also giving you a real authentic experience.

DRESS (AND BEHAVE) APPROPRIATELY AT TEMPLES | You must show respect towards the locals and their culture. This includes dressing and behaving appropriately at temples, including wearing pants or a sarong while within the temple grounds (some temples may ask you to wear a sarong even if you are in pants).
