A foodie paradise, Canggu is home to some of the best restaurants and cafes in the world. This guide takes you through the best restaurants in Canggu, including vegan, vegetarian, and carnivore options. Oh, and the best coffee, too!

Canggu is booming.

In the last decade, this coastal village has shapeshifted from rice paddies and cows to the land of hip cafes and dreamy beach clubs.

There’s plenty to be said about the tourism surge that has engulfed Bali (both positive and negative) but one thing is certain - the food scene is out of this world.

Tourists, travellers, and ex-pats no longer come to Canggu solely for surfing… Although, you will find no shortage of beginners floundering in the water as experts swoop and swoosh to avoid them.

Nowadays, dining out is a primary Canggu activity.

We’re talking about some of the best food you’re likely to eat, from cuisines all around the world, right in the heart of this bustling surf town.

This guide takes you through the best restaurants in Canggu; a selection of our favourites from six weeks spent eating our way through the town. Expect to be blown away by incredible coffee, brunch, cafes and local warungs.

BEST COFFEE SHOPS IN CANGGU

BEST COFFEE IN CANGGU: BLACKLIST COFFEE ROASTERS

Canggu is known for its aesthetic, dreamy cafes. They’re gorgeous… but there’s often little to distinguish one from the next. Open, airy, wicker, honey-coloured wood, minimalist art, off-white walls, and pastel details. It’s a vibe- and it is a good one.

Blacklist stands out because it is nothing like the rest.

The design is unassuming yet confident. The walls, counters, tables, and chairs are matte black; there is not a glimmer of white or cream in sight. The marmalade orange bench seats pop against the black.

Blacklist is a speciality roastery from Perth, Western Australia. They won the Overall Champion Roaster in Australia and New Zealand in 2020 and have a bunch of other awards to boot.

These guys know their coffee. They even offer a thirty-minute tasting to help you better understand the wonderful world of coffee, introducing you to new flavours crafted by the best brewing techniques.

However, if you’re simply in need of some tasty caffeine and don’t feel like embarking on a half-hour coffee journey, Blacklist has got you, too. They offer all the standard coffee drinks with your choice of dairy or plant-based milk.

If you’re feeling experimental, they also have a range of signature drinks that are reinventions of beloved classics like the Old Fashioned (yes, they make a coffee version of the famous cocktail) and the London Fog.

No matter your preferred coffee flavour of the day, you won’t be disappointed. Blacklist has won all those awards for a reason. Their coffee is absolutely delightful- and there’s even food too.

COOLEST CAFE IN CANGGU: BGS (BALI COFFEE BAR AND SURF SHOP)

Coffee and surf are the ultimate Canggu combination.

BGS is the Bali Coffee Bar and Surf Shop. As the name suggests, it’s a small but bustling hybrid surf shop/coffee spot. There is a constant stream of people ordering coffee, waiting for coffee, poking around the shop, and politely sidling up to the few communal seating areas.

If you’re looking for an effortlessly cool location for your first, second, or third cup of the day, you can’t go wrong with BGS.

The decor is concrete, wood, black metal, funky apparel, and lightbox signs. Again, this place is just cool right down to the coffee cups. The hip-hop music bumping in the background is exactly what you would expect from a place that knows it doesn’t have to try to impress you.

Their almond lattes are something of a legend… one that you will either love or hate. Their homemade almond milk has a distinct taste that, as with all great things, won’t be everyone’s cup of tea- ahem- coffee.

Regardless, it warrants a try!

The almond milk tastes like salt and honey, and it’s the main thing you taste in the first sip. The deeper you go into your latte or flat white, the louder the coffee gets. In our opinion, almond milk and beans are the perfect partners in crime.

Needless to say, I was a fan by the third sip.

However, if you don’t want to take your tastebuds on an adventure, they also have oat milk and regular dairy. Plus, all of their iced drinks are served with metal straws, which we love to see.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Munduk Catu No.1, Canggu

Opening Hours | 7:30 am - 10 pm

Tips | Be bold, try the almond milk!

BEST LATTE ART IN CANGGU: HUNGRY BIRD COFFEE ROASTERY

Hungry Bird Coffee Roastery is neither pretentious nor showy. This is a coffee shop that focuses on coffee– instead of trying to become a hip Instagram spot. It’s comfortable, the sort of place where you can relax with friends or on your own. And isn’t that all we really need from our coffee shops?

Well, and good coffee, of course.

In this department, Hungry Bird also delivers. They roast their own beans, expertly craft their coffee beverages, and deliver extravagant latte art with ease. Seriously, their latte art is incredible. Don’t be surprised if your coffee comes with a rooster, rabbit, or seahorse!

The head trainer at Hungry Bird (the latte wizard, as he is referred to on their website) consistently places in the top 4 in the Indonesian Latte Art Championship. He even won back in 2019.

If you stop by Hungry Bird for a coffee, you’ll see why!

BEST BRUNCH IN CANGGU

BEST BRUNCH IN CANGGU: CRATE CAFE

In our humble opinion, Crate Cafe is undeniably the best brunch restaurant in Canggu. And, truth be told, everyone else thinks so too.

Crate Cafe is busy. Really busy. It’s always packed and seating is always scarce (fortunately, there are several communal tables where you can usually squeeze in). The line to order food is often very, very long- but it does move quickly so don’t be too intimidated! The food and coffee are worth it.

Crate Cafe is set up in an open-air industrial building. If you took away the crate tables, garden furniture with their faded pastel cushions, and filament light bulbs swaying on long wires, this place would look like a large scooter garage.

A trip to Crate Cafe requires patience and a pair of eagle eyes in order to spot the first table that suddenly becomes available. You’ll need to move fast.

But… if you’re not in a rush, if you’re taking your time and slowly savouring the day… Crate Cafe will not disappoint.

The oat dirty chai was divine. The chia puddings look like something from a dream. I’ve never seen chia puddings like these… Spilling over with pillowy clouds of dragonfruit pink and spirulina blue.

There’s something called the “Brekkie in Bread,” which is a ball of pumpkin-sized bread stuffed with egg and bacon.

Crate Cafe is also one of the few places in the world where you can get truly enormous salad.

There’s something at Crate Cafe for everyone, vegetarians and omnivores alike. The prices are beyond reasonable and the portion sizes are hefty.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Canggu Padang Linjong No.49F, Canggu

Opening Hours | 6am - 4pm

Tips | Be patient and bring a book or a friend! The wifi is usually down.

BEST VEGAN BRUNCH IN CANGGU: I AM VEGAN BABE

I Am Vegan Babe is the perfect combination of vibe and flavour. It has been decorated to perfection but with food this good, it’s so much more than just a trendy Instagram spot.

On the ground floor, the coffee station is adorable with a pastel rainbow wall and a shiny espresso machine. The rest of the aesthetic is polished concrete, stylish tile flooring, white accents, flourishing plants.

If you follow the staircase up, you find white walls bumpy with seashells and plenty of bench seating. One wall is the designated laptop zone and you’ll see digital nomads sitting on couches and at the long, communal table. You have a nice view of the farm across the road and can even catch a glimpse of the ocean.

The food is fantastic all day long, however, I Am Vegan Babe is our clear favourite for vegan brunch. The menu is extensive (almost overwhelmingly so) and there are ample options to satisfy both the sweet and savoury lover.

The french toast is delicious and practically half a loaf of bread. Because of its size and sheer sweetness, we would recommend sharing with a friend!

Their Mushroom Melt sourdough sandwich, however, is scrumptious heaven in bread.

Unfortunately, the coffee was underwhelming. Everything else on the menu is fantastic so the disappointing latte feels almost tragic. We recommend skipping on coffee with your brunch in lieu of a smoothie and getting your caffeine fix elsewhere.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Tanah Barak No.49, Canggu

Opening Hours | 7am - 10pm

BEST VEGETARIAN BRUNCH IN CANGGU: THE SHADY SHACK

The Shady Shack is right next door to I Am Vegan Babe, so if you absolutely need to have eggs for breakfast, this is your spot.

At Shady Shack, you sit outside in the verdant garden - with the exception of a few couches lining the veranda of the main shack, you eat at wooden tables surrounded by lush foliage. Thanks to this small jungle and a few fans hanging from above, the dining area stays relatively cool all day.

The food is not fancy and won’t break any flavour records. Yet it remains a favourite spot among travelling vegetarians. Shady Shack is where you go once you’re tired of extravagant and inventive dishes, and want good, simple food.

The Shady Shack is also one of the few strictly vegetarian Canggu restaurants. There are many 100% vegan spots, but vegetarian? Not so much.

Consequently, Shady Shack is your best bet if you want your eggs and halloumi in a meat-free environment.

That being said, they do make excellent smoothies.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Tanah Barak No.57, Canggu

Opening Hours | 8am - 9pm

BEST MEAT LOVERS BRUNCH IN CANGGU: BAKED

There’s usually a swarm of activity buzzing around the entrance of Baked in Berawa.

From the street, it looks like a tiny cafe overspilling with people. But it’s actually a sizable two-storey building with a patio. Upstairs, you’ll find additional seating and a shop with merch and coffee paraphernalia.

Admittedly, we didn’t eat here but we did poke our heads in to see what all the fuss was about. This place was packed with people and a steady supply of eggs, bacon, sausages, and pastries streamed from the kitchen.

This is not a vegan-friendly spot (your only option is the avo toast). Vegetarians, however, have plenty of options to choose from including eggs any way, ricotta hotcakes, and loaded toast.

For meat lovers, there are bacon slabs, whipped butter, lamb sausages, and countless poached eggs.

Baked is your place if you’re someone who does not like to mess around with brunch. This bustling cafe aims to leave all of its customers satiated with heavy food that goes down easy.

They also take their coffee seriously by roasting their own beans, which you can buy at their shop upstairs.

BEST RESTAURANTS IN CANGGU

BEST NOODLES IN CANGGU: LENA’S KITCHEN

Lena’s Kitchen offers handmade noodles alongside other family recipes and a selection of traditional Indonesian dishes. We ate here several times, slowly eating our way through the menu, and did not have a single underwhelming meal.

Lena has created omnivore, vegetarian, and vegan versions of her iconic homemade noodle dishes. The omnivore and vegetarian options are made with egg noodles, whereas the vegan alternatives use rice noodles.

All noodles are made fresh daily, without preservatives, and you can really taste the difference.

Each noodle dish comes with a bowl of soup, which we learned that you’re supposed to pour into the noodle bowl during our second visit to Lena’s.

We also recommend the tahu isi (stuffed fried tofu) for an appetiser or snack.

This is one of our favourite spots in Canggu- we can’t recommend it enough!

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Raya Semat No. 58, Tibubeneng

Opening Hours | 9 am - 9 pm

Tips | Pour the soup/broth over the noodles!

BEST RAMEN IN CANGGU: SHOFUKU RAMEN BAR

This is Shofuku’s second restaurant in Bali, the first opening in Denpasar in 2021. Their flagship restaurant became an instant hit amongst locals and tourists, so much so that they opened their second location a year later.

Shofuku Ramen Bar - Canggu is situated in the Berawa district, a neighbourhood famous for its abundant dining opportunities.

Although they offer a range of tempting ramen choices, Shofuku is most renowned for its thick, 8-hour chicken broth. They also have a lighter version, as well as a miso broth for their vegan ramen (beef and fish broths are also available).

All dishes feature local ingredients and the noodles are made fresh.

A word on the vegan Mushroom Miso Ramen- it wasn’t the best broth I’ve ever had but it was up there. What really stood out were the ingredients, mainly all the mushrooms. It normally comes with grilled corn, however, they were all out when we visited.

Shofuku also offers donburi, katsu, bento boxes, and a few salads.

Decor-wise, it’s clean and minimalistic, exactly what you would expect from a successful Japanese restaurant. You can watch the kitchen work its magic through the cutaway in a concrete wall.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Merdeka No.10, Sumerta Kelod

Opening Hours | 11am - 11pm

BEST VEGAN RESTAURANT IN CANGGU: PELS SUPERSHOP

Pels, formerly Pelaton Supershop, deserves a spot in basically every category. They have one of the best brunch offerings in Canggu (50% off on Sundays!) and one of the best oat lattes. Whatever you need, whenever you need it, Pels has it.

Smoothie bowl? Check. Pels Supershop has my favourite smoothie bowl in all of Canggu. It’s thick, large, packed with good ingredients, and comes at the right temperature (cool, not freezing). But their three different flavours of bowls aren’t the only stars on the menu.

Everything at Pels is delicious.

That’s why this restaurant has been a popular spot since it opened- and not just amongst vegans! After all, good food is good food. And this food is good.

You can’t go wrong when ordering… but our personal recommendations would be the Super Toastie, the Mediterranean Bowl, and the Powerhouse Bowl.

The Super Toastie has melted “mozzarella” which is chefs kiss. It’s a loaded sandwich that is just as filling as it is delicious! The Powerhouse Bowl nearly rivals the salads at Crate Cafe; large, filled with goodness, and delicious.

Pels also has a pizza shop around the corner that’s open for dinner. It’s buy-one-get-one-free on Sundays!

And if all that wasn’t enough, the staff at Pels are lovely. You will always feel welcome and your glass of water will always be full.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Pantai Berawa No.46, Tibubeneng

Opening Hours | 8 am - 9 pm

Tips | Select brunch dishes are 50% off every Sunday morning.

BEST SEAFOOD IN CANGGU: MOANA FISH EATERY

Something about Moana Fish Eatery in the evening reminds us of Tortuga from “Pirates of the Caribbean,” only without the debauchery and piracy.

Maybe it’s the candles, the wicker lamps, the wisps of dried thatch hanging overhead? Then there are the bar stools carved with tiki faces. Even the plants seem to be growing rogue.

All that is combined with the happy chatter of a full house, and you get a really cool atmosphere.

Moana Fish Eatery is a Polynesian restaurant turned bohemian tiki bar. They also serve some of the best seafood in all of Canggu, making Moana a popular dinner destination for both ex-pats and tourists.

This is one of those Canggu restaurants that warrants making a reservation. Otherwise, you will struggle to find a seat at dinnertime.

But once you get a table, what should you order? The poke bowls and the tuna platter are two fan favourites.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.28, Canggu

Opening Hours | 8 am - 11 pm

Tips | Make a reservation, Moana fills up fast!

BEST MENU IN CANGGU: SECRET SPOT - BATU BOLONG

Despite its name, this place is anything but a secret. Secret Spot has made a name for itself by providing delicious (vegan) fare, great coffee, and delectable treats.

With two locations, one in Batu Bolong and one in Berawa, the secret is definitely out.

The Berawa location is right next door to Pels Supershop and is much smaller than their Batu Bolong location, which is across the street from Blacklist Coffee Roasters.

Secret Spot - Batu Bolong is made up of three rooms, each with comfortable seating and its own air conditioner (which is important information on an island this hot). There are many happy plants, orange cushions, polished concrete, and yet more plants. One wall is lined with surfboards and a vintage white bike. It’s a beautiful, intentionally crafted space that looks great in the background of Instagram photos but doesn’t feel even remotely pretentious.

No matter when hunger strikes, Secret Spot is there. They open before 8:00 am and close at 11:00 pm, providing excellent snacks, meals, and desserts throughout the day. During daytime hours, expect to see a lot of digital nomads with their laptops. But when the sun sets, Secret Spot becomes a lively hub for mingling friends.

Their menu isn’t a hundred miles long but still covers just about everything. Brunch? Pizza? Falafel? Curry? Pasta? Ramen? You can find it all here.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Tanah Barak No.7, Canggu

Opening Hours | 7:30am - 11pm

Tips | Bring your reusable water bottle, they have a free refill station!

BEST VEGAN PASTA IN CANGGU: AMAMI

Vegan Italian food in Indonesia? Yes. Absolutely yes.

Let’s be honest, the vegan Italian options are usually pretty scarce. Pasta. Red arrabbiata sauce. Maybe some vegetables. Hopefully, black olives.

But what about the rest of the wonderful world of Italian cuisine? I want ravioli.

And Amami has the ravioli. They also have lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, bolognese, carbonara, luxurious bruschetta, soups, pizzas, and calzones. Whatever you choose, your meal will not be short on flavour. And if you order two main dishes, you get a free tiramisu on Fridays.

Believe me, you want the tiramisu. You need the tiramisu.

But back to the ravioli, It’s handmade with a tempeh centre and plated with mushrooms, “cheese,” and shaved almonds. The flavours are heavenly. It tastes like they sing sweet love songs to the mushrooms in the kitchen and massage love into the ravioli. Even the spaghetti with meatballs, which is a simple dish by comparison, is perfect. It’s exactly what you would want from spaghetti.

It’s worth saying that while Amami is a vegan restaurant (you’ll find no meat, cheese, or butter here), their food is fantastic by any standards. Omnivores, don’t be shy!

THE DETAILS

Where | Jalan Raya Pantai Berawa No. 43 Tibubeneng

Opening Hours | 1pm - 10pm

Tips | Visit on Friday for a free tiramisu when you order two main dishes.

BEST PLACE TO HANG OUT IN CANGGU: ZIN CAFE

ZIN has a lot of things going for it. It’s a few minutes from the beach, which makes it a great refuel station post-surf. They also have villas and rooms available for upwards of 2,000,000 IDR per night. There’s even an indoor cycling gym next door that’s one part of their fitness studio.

The restaurant is spread out over three floors, including a fantastic rooftop area where views of the neighbourhood peek through the finger-like leaves of the tallest palms.

It’s a beautiful spot to watch the sunset (or evacuate to in the event of a tsunami. Seriously, this is a designated tsunami evacuation zone.).

Like many Canggu restaurants, ZIN Cafe is an open-air concept with few walls and tall ceilings. It’s a bright, breezy, and peaceful space to spend time in. There is no shortage of wicker chairs and wooden tables so you’ll never struggle to find a seat.

ZIN also has an incredible coworking space attached to the restaurant. It’s situated in a giant bamboo treehouse surrounded by waving palm fronds. This space is completely free to use and you can stay here as long as you like, completely unbothered. There’s no table service but you can order food or drinks easily using QR codes.

The food is good, however, not as memorable as the location.

ZIN also has its own coffee roastery, Z Roasters.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Nelayan No.78F, Canggu

Opening Hours | 7am - 10pm

BEST PIZZA IN CANGGU: LUIGI’S HOT PIZZA

A regular during our six weeks spent in Canggu, Luigi’s hot pizza is part restaurant, part debaucherous nightclub, with cocktails and beats served alongside ridiculously good pizza.

Set in the heart of Canggu, alongside the hipster hub of Deus ex Machina, Luigi’s is mostly outdoor with large wooden sharing tables and almost nightly the place is packed to the brim with party-goers and live DJ’s.

The pizzas are Neapolitan style and nail it in terms of flavour. We highly recommend the simple margherita (top it with chilli oil), siciliana, and funghi, and there are also vegan options.

For cocktails, the Moscow Mule always goes down a treat (especially in that Bali heat), while Luigi’s Negroni is classicly Italian.

The staff are on the ball, and on the party nights (Monday, if we’re not mistaken), the shots come out and are freely poured into the mouths of any willing participants.

All in all, you never visited Canggu unless you visited Luigi’s.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jalan Batu Mejan, Canggu, North Kuta, Badung, Bali 80351

Opening Hours | 4 pm - Late

BEST MEXICAN IN CANGGU: LA CALITA

The international food scene in Canggu is off the charts (as you’ve no doubt figured out with this post), and La Calita is the best Mexican we tried in Bali.

Located close to Canggu junction in an aesthetically pleasing space (isn’t everywhere in Canggu?!), La Calita serves simple, tasty Mexican food which closely resembles what you’d find on the streets in Mexico. Lavish flavours, colourful ingredients, and subtle textures make it a must-visit restaurant in Canggu.

There are meat and vegetarian options - being vegetarian we found love in the BBQ corn (drool), cauliflower tacos, jackfruit quesadillas, and cauliflower popcorn (these live rent-free in our head).

Cocktails are also served and can be ordered by the jug - perfect for groups. We suggest any of the margaritas (it’s Mexican, after all), or the ginger minger (we’ve got a thing for ginger!).

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.68, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung

Opening Hours | 12 pm - 12 am

BEST ITALIAN IN CANGGU: BOTTEGA ITALIANA BERAWA

Sometimes, no matter how much you love nasi goreng, you just want simple, delicious pasta. Authentic, fresh, Italian pasta can be hard to replicate, especially on a tropical Island in the middle of the Indonesian archipelago. And yet Bottega Italiana absolutely nails it.

With five restaurants dotted between Seminyak and Perernan, Bottega Italiana makes unpretentious Italian pasta and sauces, served up in some lovely, sun-drenched spaces that will make you feel like you’re sitting on the Amalfi.

Pasta is made daily, with local and imported ingredients, so the authentic pasta flavours are fresh and delicious. Basically, the menu works like this - chose your fresh pasta, and your favourite sauce to accompany it (there are also a range of typically Italian sauces, ranging from ragu through to pesto), and bam, out it comes, fresh, tasty and satiating.

We highly recommend the simple pomodorino, topped with stracciatella, or the crema di zucchini.

If you’re after some more Italian flavours, they also serve a range of Italian meats, cheeses, breads and antipasti, as well as mouth-watering desserts (tiramisu for the win).

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Pantai Berawa No.77, Tibubeneng, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung

Opening Hours | 9 am - 11 pm

BEST GELATO IN CANGGU: GAYA

We’re gelato fans, and if we’re on the road, we live by the motto “a gelato a day keeps the doctor away”.

Bali, though, isn’t blessed with a strong gelato scene, so it wasn’t until our Italian friend introduced us to “the best gelato in Bali”, did we finally try true, Italian-style gelato.

Gaya was that place - a small, non-descript shopfront close to La Brisa in Echo Beach. Serving a range of traditional and local-inspired flavours using 100& natural ingredients, Gaya makes exceptional, rich, delicious gelato.

We’re big fans of the coconut and pistachio flavours, however, we recommend trying some of the local, tropical varieties.

THE DETAILS

Where | Echo Beach, Jalan Batu Mejan, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung

Opening Hours | 9 am - 9 pm

BEST WARUNGS IN CANGGU

Canggu restaurants offer delectable dining experiences in beautiful, stylish settings. But the food can come with a higher price tag (and the restaurants are often owned by foreigners).

Warungs (family-owned businesses) are a great way to fill your belly for less while also supporting the locals. Plus, you get to enjoy real Indonesian food instead of the typical Western dishes like burgers, pasta, and smoothie bowls found at higher-end restaurants.

Although outnumbered by Western establishments on most Canggu streets, there are ample warungs for you to satisfy your Indonesian cravings. Many warungs are buffet style where you pay per plate, however, you can order off a menu if you wish.

To build your own plate, the process is simple: point to order. Someone will fill your plate for you (starting with rice) and then tally it up. This process can be a bit intimidating for vegetarians but in our experience, the staff will help you navigate the dishes according to your dietary restrictions.

VARUNA WARUNG

Varuna Warung is one of the most popular local spots in Canggu and an absolute hub of activity around dinnertime!

Seating can be scarce and a queue often builds between the serving area and the cash register. It’s best to throw yourself into the swarm.

This was the first warung we went to so I was worried about navigating the buffet as a vegetarian.

However, the staff were absolutely fantastic and helped me avoid the chicken legs and seafood. She said she wouldn’t let anything non-vegetarian onto my plate, which I appreciated.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Tanah Barak No.45, Canggu

Opening Hours | 10am - 9pm

WARUNG SIKA

Warung Sika is located in Batu Bolong on the same street as Shady Shack and I Am Vegan Babe (and right around the corner from Blacklist Coffee and Secret Spot). If you’re hungry, this is the street to visit.

It’s not as packed as Varuna Warung but is still a popular place for lunch amongst travellers looking for good food at a good price.

We recommend going earlier in the day when the food is freshly cooked. Some dishes (particularly the meaty ones) get a bit stale as the day goes on.

THE DETAILS

Where | Jl. Tanah Barak No.45, Canggu

Opening Hours | 9am - 9pm
