With its beautifully sun-faded, understated luxury feel, you could just as easily feel transported to an architect’s summer home in Tuscany as in Daylesford’s little valley - which actually isn’t so far-fetched given the region has a Swiss-Italian heritage dating to the gold rush era.

As locals, we think they're worth the short detour: most are just 20-odd minutes from Daylesford, they tick the proper retreat box, and staying a bit further afield is a lovely way to see the region, while also spreading tourist dollars around little towns like Trentham and Creswick that make this part of Victoria special.
Just five minutes up the road, mineral-soaked Hepburn Springs is home to the historic Hepburn Bathhouse and the flower-lined Lavandula farm. It's where you go to disappear for a couple of days and properly rejuvenate, and the stays we’ve shortlisted below lean right into that.
SLOW HOUSE | HEPBURN SPRINGS
Slow House by name and by nature; this beautiful light-filled Hepburn Springs studio is just made for doing very little. A cosy retreat for two, it’s tucked behind hosts Amity and Toby’s own restored Californian bungalow, offering a secluded and private (it has its own driveway and entrance) stay while still being on the doorstep of super-responsive hosts if needed.
Expect a gorgeous open plan barn-style kitchen and lounge (complete with wood fire!), king bedroom, huge tub perfect for long soaks - plus a welcome basket, thoughtful touches throughout, and even the occasional kangaroo visitor in the driveway.
It’s also perfectly placed for whatever’s brought you to the Daylesford and Hepburn region: step out the door to the Goldfields Track, wander to the Hepburn Bathhouse, spas, and cafes (all within 15 minutes), or drive just five-minutes to Daylesford when you want it.

It causes us to slow down every time we drive past it, so beautiful is the 1859 Palladian-style Old Macaroni Factory (the oldest of its kind in Australia!) - and the inside of Pietro’s Residence is just as spectacular.
Built by Italian brothers Pietro and Giacomo Lucini, political exiles who landed, eventually, in Hepburn where they created the country’s first pasta factory, the once-abandoned property has been transformed into a creative accommodation and events space by current owners Jenni and Jennie. They’ve kept both the Old Factory and Pietro’s Residence history and character, including the original painted ceilings and wall murals depicting Italy’s Risorgimento, alongside contemporary, design-forward touches: the blue Moroccan tiled bathroom, hydronic heating and gas fireplace, and aesthetic furnishings.
There’s no kitchen, just a bar fridge and tea/coffee station, so this stay’s best saved for when you want to explore the best of Hepburn and Daylesford’s eateries. Keep an eye on the Old Macaroni Factory’s events page too, which regularly hosts special dining pop ups in conjunction with local restaurants.

WHERE IS DAYLESFORD?
Daylesford’s around 1.5 hours north-west of Melbourne’s CBD, in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range.
It was first established as a gold-mining town in 1852, bringing wealth and prosperity to the region, much like the rest of western Victoria. Although the gold-mining days are long passed, the town is now famous for its spas, culinary scene, and contemporary art, and is one of Victoria’s premier tourist towns.
CAN I GET TO DAYLESFORD WITHOUT A CAR?
It is possible to get to Daylesford on vLine services (it takes about 2 hours from Melbourne CBD), but we don’t really recommend going without a car unless you’re planning to spend your whole weekend in Daylesford town and not sightsee further.
Most of Daylesford and Hepburn Spring’s best attractions are only accessible via your own car. If you need to hire one, we recommend Discover Cars.

WHEN’S THE BEST TIME TO BOOK A DAYLESFORD AIRBNB?
Truthfully, Daylesford is great in every season and almost always busy on weekends - but particularly so on long weekends, during the cooler spa season (Autumn and Winter) and peak wedding season (January - March).
We’d recommend booking at least 4–8 weeks ahead for weekends, and earlier for long weekends, weddings, and school holidays, as the best cottages go very quickly.
IS DAYLESFORD WALKABLE?
Yes, very much so! Within the historic centre, there are a huge number of boutiques, galleries and vintage stores to peruse. In addition, there’s an excellent brunch, lunch, dinner and wine options on just about every corner.
If you’re feeling up to it, the walk up to Wombat Hill Gardens is steep, but worth it for the views.
